ghost flow

I've been caught a couple of times on this because the float inside the flow check wasn't tightened down enough.

I have an oil fired Burnham boiler on the lower level of a 2 story house. The house originally was 1500 SF with fintube baseboard heat on zone valves. I added on an additional 1300 SF and used in floor tubing in gypcrete and left the fintube as is. The radiant is controlled by relays to pumps, (two zones). The second level zone has begun to radiate hot water to the manifold and part way into the loops in the floor when not calling for heat. The resulting "ghost flow" is creating a too warm zone in a bedroom where the manifold is located while the rest of the zone is cool.
I recently installed a flow control valve above the circulating pump to try and stem the problem with no luck.
I am now considering adding a zone valve ahead of the pump to try to control the problem but I am unsure how this would be wired in with the pump relay.
    Any ideas? Thanks.
  • Got drawings?

    Or photographs...

LOTS of things that it COULD be, or NOT. And ghost flow is but one of them.

  • Kind of tight quarters in the boiler room but this shows the pumps for radiant and zone valves for fintube and boiler mate.

    gravity flow

if the flow control is not correcting the flow problem , the zone valve will not help either. flow control may be defective or flow is somehow backing up from returns. is flow control ips or sweat type ? dirt or solder may be on seat of valve. is flow control valve installed correctly ?

  • The flow control is not sweat type and I believe it is installed correctly.

  • The flow control is not sweat type and I believe it is installed correctly. In the attached picture the flow control is above the Grundfos pump on the right. This is the zone for the second floor that is giving me problems.

    ghost busters

the flow control valves i am familiar with are usually horizontal only type. ie: b & g or taco. cannot make out what you used but with a conventioal flow control installed correctly on a closed loop there will be no gravity flow. if that valve is installed as per factory spec. sheet it could be defective.photo is not clear. hope this helps.

    Thanks Bob,
It's a B&G valve that can go vertical or horizontal. Guess either it is defective or I have ruined it during install.

    vertical flow-check

i see that b. & g. now makes a flow flow check for vertical application. model HT that might be the one you installed . if so take it apart & examine. it should work fine. THIS IS A NEW PRODUCT . AT LEAST TO ME.
