A grateful thank you to all US veterans
Throughout the history of this country during war and peace, there have been Americans willing to serve for the freedom of many. I know we have quite a few vets on the Wall and I have no doubt that your service to this country was just as professional as the mechanical work you perform now. THANK YOU
Lead, Follow, or get out of the way!!!!

It seems to me
that Veterans Day has become one of the "lost" holidays. People are far more interested in trading today, for the day after Thanksgiving, and getting a four day weekend. I always think back to my days on board the USS Inchon (LPH-12) and the people I served with. I also think of my dad (Navy Corpsman, with the Marines during Korea, Captain, USAR, Medical Corps, during Vietnam). My Grandfather, a carpenter in the Army Air Corps, during WW1, when planes were built from wood. My Uncle Wally, 6 tours in Vietnam, not to mention millions of others.
The day set up to honer them, is now a trade for the first shopping day of the Christmas season.
Just my thoughts.

Agreed. This is still Armistice Day to me; grandpa was in that one. My Uncle George (dad's kid brother) is buried in the big military cemetery outside of Liege, Belgium. His B-24 was shot down 11/5/1943. Its a day to reflect and be thankful for what we have.0 -
I am currently reading Tom Brokows book
Man do we owe a lot to those that served in WWII. My time in the USAF was a walk in the park compared to what those vets endured.

Thanks indeed
What a debt we owe to the WW2 vets, watching the "war in the pacific" program on pbs a few nights ago thinking of my late uncle who was on a carrier during the kamakazi attacks, or my other uncle who fought in n. africa, italy and ended up at the battle of the bulge. Real heros. But, don't forget the kids today in Iraq and Afganistan write them as much as possible, as a VN vet I remember how much mail means to a soldier.0 -
Brothers
Many thanks to our armed forces around the world. Without them we would not be able to have the freedoms and the country that we have today. Happy birthday to my brothers in the Marines Semper Fi guys0 -
Yes indeed!
We all owe a great debt to our veterans, and we too often neglect to say thank you.
Thank you to all who have served their country, and who are serving our country today. What a sacrifice you have made.

It never cases to amaze me how easily people forget. Especially since we are in the midst of a war.

\"Lead, Follow, or Get Out of the Way!\"
That was the motto of the 42 CES at LAFB, Maine when I was there.
My father was career military - Lt. Col in the Army with two tours in 'Nam as a Huey pilot...
I have a nephew at Annapolis, and another in West Point Prep...could only be prouder if it was my own son.
God bless all who have fought or where ready - especially those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
Take Care, PJO0 -

Many are called
but few are chosen.
Where would the world be today without American veterans?
From Bunker(Breed)Hill to Baghdad, God bless every one.
This site exists because others sacrificed.

Thanks Ranger and Dave.
MK3 J.C.A. USCG...1981-1985.
Most folks DON'T know that Coasties were the guys who got our heros to the beach. Most DON'T know that Coasties were the guys that navigated the deltas during Vietnam, and most think of the Coast Guard as a lifesaving service.
In time of war, we (used to) fall under the Navy Department, and are the first ones called up for close water support. The C.G. is now under the Dept. of Homeland Security, and getting the money they deserve. (not a slam...but any Captain can float a city into an ocean near enough to a war zone to set it ablaze, but it takes a real SAILOR to get these fighters to the beach and where the big boys can't go, and that's just what the Coasties DID during all wars since 1920)
Thank a Vet, say a prayer and please remember all the sacrifices that have been made so you can read this right now. Happy Veterans Day to all.
P.S., Ranger, I was right across the Sound from you at Montauk N.Y. station from Feb 82 until april 84. Chris0 -

That was indeed the motto of the 42nd CES. I was there from 85-89 (plumbing shop). What shop were you in? I spent many many freezing cold round the clock water break main repairs up there. Remember how most of civilians we worked with spoke in that acadian french so that noone knew what or who they were talking about?
The moose was loose on Loring AFB.

PLEASE see attachment.. a good one that says it all
Its Canadian maritime music, but says it all, From an ex Navy man to all who served or are serving inthe cause of PEACE!
Me and my family thank you.0 -
Darin
I was there from Feb. '79 to August '82.
It was getting fixed up the last year I was there, and they probably tore my dorm down by the time you got there...near the transportation area on the east end of the base.
I was in Water and Waste(d) :-) and worked at the water plant (Madawaska Dam), Booster Station and a brief stint at the sewage plant.
My boss at the water plant was nicknamed Frenchy...could have used that name for half the civilians!
Take care, PJO0 -
Without Vet's,
the world wouldn't be the place it is today.
Thanks for starting the thread, Darin, so we don't forget.
Thanks, Mitch, for the song, as only an Irishman could sing it.
The stopped & silent people in the video reminded me of my first Armistice day. It was Wallsend-on-Tyne at "The Cenotaph" at "Burnbank", I was ten, it was 46 yr's ago and I will not forget it as long as I live. My Dad (an ex Army marksman ???)played side/snare drum and my uncle Brian played bagpipes in the Royal Northumberlad Fuselier Band.
When the second hand reached twelve, at eleven AM, everything, and I mean EVERYTHING & everyone in the British Isles came to a complete stop for two very, very silent minutes.
Cars pulled over, business stopped, everyone removed their hats, hung their heads, and gave silent, personal thanks those who had served.
Good will always prevail, ALWAYS.
Ever noticed how Good is only one letter longer than GOD.
I miss my Dad & two uncle George's, but they're not gone, and definitely not forgotten.

don't thank me
thank a vet..moved me to tears when I watched this one. (and he's a Maritimer, from the Atlantic Provinces, although the music definitely has an Irish flavour.)
The pubs are rife with that sea lovin music..if you like it go to places like the lower deck in Halifax NS, or the Crows nest in Newfoundland...they aren't hard to find.
"Honour Guard....DIIIIIIIISSSSSSSS...Missed!"

this generation
Just to give some some insight to the guys and gals in todays armed services.
My boy joined the Army after 9/11, we're from Long Island so that day hit particullary hard. He has been stationed at Fort Sill for his three years. Him and his buddies FUMED at the fact that they sitting stateside while older reserves with wives and children were activated and sent over to Iraq.
John was supposed to get out this August, he extended to go to Iraq, no bonus ot other incentives. He tried to tell me that he was "extended", I knew that was BS, I'd been following the MOS's that were being extended and "Rocket Launcher's" was not one of them and called him on it.
Turns out that with him extending for deployement another troop from the outfit got to go back to the world with his wife and kids.
I think he does not want miss "his war"
He leaves for Kuwait this wednesday, November 16.
Wish him well and God speed.
Thanks wallies.0 -
The singer is
Terry Kelly.
What an inspiring person he is. Blind since the age of two.
His website is www.terry-kelly.com
Kelly does have an Irish flavour to it.
Thanks again, Mitch.

Kevin
My boy is only 9 years old and I have a few years left before I have to let him make his own life choices. I have wondered how I would react if my only son told me he was volunteering for dangerous duty in our military.
I love him with every part of my being, but I know that someday he will not have to "do what I say".
There are countless ways to screw up in this world, but I do not count believing in freedom as one of them.
I'd like to know your son's name so that I may include him in my prayers.
There are many more that appreciate his sense of duty than do not.
In any event, he has chosen his own path. It means a lot to him. I want him to come home and make you feel even older when he hands you a grandchild!
May God watch over him.
