Would really appreciate any advice and experience from others out there either in support or against an oil to gas conversion who have gone through this and or considered it.
Thanks in advance!

I looked at it a few years ago
when oil was still cheap when Lilco was offering "free boilers" (but thousands in plumber fees). Take a hard look at the fuel costs. Heating oil
has come down the last few weeks. Nat gas has only been going up. The utilities will lower the price a few cents next spring, not before. I think a high efficency oil boiler replacement will be more cost effective then a gas conversion any day.0 -
Depends on where you live...
... some areas have always had cheap gas and expensive oil, other areas like the NE had it the other way around. I would compare the two fuel sources on a $/BTU basis in your area and ideally account for the seasonal efficiency of the heating plant as well.
I stuck to oil using a very efficient, non-condensing oil boiler because gas prices in MA traditionally were 40% higher than oil. Furthermore, 2/3 of our gas price is in the delivery ($1.05/therm) while the remaining 1/3 (50cents) is the actual cost of the gas. Thus, there is no way for gas to get significantly less expensive and our gas rates this winter are going up another 20+% thanks to the lack of more long-term supply contracts.
If you can still get good oil burner support, etc. I would stick to oil. At least you can shop around your providers and bunker the stuff ahead of winter demand.0 -
Cost
I coverted to oil from gas a few years ago.I think I still owe the gas co. money. Gas was cheaper during the '80's0
