"Go look in the truck and tell me what fittings we have."

    (five minutes later)

    "We got 2- 45s, boss!"

"OK, fire up the welder and stand back."

    and it works [ somewhat !!! ]

in russia & poland they weld everything & technology is rare. was probably done by a refugee with access to a welding machine. have seen some of this type of work in brooklyn. you gotta see how they bend pipe & eliminate fittings. wild west was never like this.

I think those were the same guys?!?!?

Only two kinds of "short-cuts". Good idea and Bad idea.

Laws are laws and as long as you obey the law you are free. Once you break the law, you submit yourself to the authority of the law....I.E Step off a high place you try to break the law of gravity. Well........now you are subject to the authority of that law. See ya'!

    Not bad I guess

If you needed emergency heat, and were gonna come back later and fix it right. But to leave it that way? Yeah that's it, maybe this was just a temporary job and the guy got killed in an accident on the way to the wholesaler ... or to the scrapyard where he got his supplies. Or maybe his truck just broke down. Can you imagine what he might have been driving? Kevin

    You laugh but...

... one local installer did something quite similar on a 1-pipe steam system for our downstairs neighbors in our current rental building. He may have used steel pipe and welded nothing, but the basic 45° angle geometry, bull-headed T, and all that is similar. That boiler was installed last year.

Our steam supply pipe goes from a 4" tapping at the boiler down to 2" to the ceiling where it goes back to 4". There is no Hartford loop. Venting is inadequate. Etc.

In other words, you don't have to travel to Brooklyn to experience fitting-saving ingenuity. I'll try to post a picture sometime.
