Hanging GE boiler replacement

does try to split these jobs up between 3 of us mechanics , but at the end of the year somehow I wind up installing more than 1/3 . Poor Sal , my partner , is on almost every one of these . The good thing is he can do these blindfolded . Thanks Robert .

of one of these in a long time . This one's noteworthy because the original radiant is still connected and running . And the 2nd floor is unfinished , which is much rarer than having the radiant still working . The first pic is the cover . The boiler sits 4 feet off the ground against a common chimney with a fireplace ( separate flues ) . This configuration makes walking through the hallway to the bathroom and back bedrooms a pain in the a.. if you're a heavy hitter .
  • With the cover off

Pretty much a mess , huh ? They did build these to last . These are going on 56 years or better .
  • Weil Mclain 3L

special built for these homes . Basically it's the only boiler that fits on the shelf again . We are installing these at a fast clip , usually 2 a week . We've tried 4 different brand oil burners and the general concensus is the Riello F3 burns the most quiet . That's the most important factor other than safety when it comes to replacing a boiler in a kitchen .

You can noticably see the blackness above the boiler on the ceiling . It's not from boiler soot , it is decades of dust in the makeup air being drawn in from a small gap at the ceiling . This problem is lessened dramatically by an air gap between the boiler plate and the cover . We've found that once the homeowner repaints the celing the streaks don't come back with a new boiler up there .

    Gotta love....

The soot marks on the ceiling !

The "Campanelli homes" we have up here have a wall in the kitchen with the York boilers pushed up against them and pretty much look the same.

Oh Master of the shoehorn...and provider of the envious "Deadlift"...show us your solution. Can you please explain to me the venting issues associated with this changeout? Do you have to knock a new hole in the chimney? The G.E.'s I remember were all bottom flue....and to match up the Weils you use...you must hafta go into it quite a bit higher.

    Awaiting the final......Chris
  • Just missed my last post

These old GEs did have the vent at the bottom , but they came with a special made flupipe that connects to the breech at the same height the Weil Gold vents out the back . We have to turn an ell a bit and add a small piece of fluepipe , but it usually slips right into the chimney . We've actually been having a hard time with an inspector about not having a barometric on these boilers . The way I read it in NFPA and in the Weil instructions , the barometric is only needed if necessary . Time and again on hundreds of these installs with no barometric , we've had spot on draft control .

I see you still haven't made amends with the dispatcher yet. Maybe try a nice bottle of vino, that usually works for me.

    Once again, great job!

    really don't

Ron, I really don't know how you do it. Then again I would probably run screaming from the room the first time I removed the cover and saw that mess you had to start with. Simply amazing!!! It's incredible what you guy's deal with...

    Man that is BRUTAL.

put the cover back over it Quick...:)
  • Al

these are not so bad to install after the first few . The truck is only 15 feet away , almost all the pipes are less than a foot to connect , same with the wires . The **** is jacking the old one down and the new one up and connecting the fluepipe . That , and a frugal homeowner who refuses to keep the AC on since we're going in and out . The thermostat read 85 , and it had to be at least 20 degrees hotter at the celing where we worked most of the day . Thanks alot Al .
  • I can't believe

any designer would've thought of hanging a boiler off the floor , till I seen my first GE . I was shocked when my partner told me we were going to put a new one back up there . Those were the Weil 68 series . Thanks rjbphd
  • This was a fairly easy one too

We've had one with 4 zones and an aquabooster under the boiler . That had only one circ at the boiler though . We did have one hanger with 3 circs at the boiler . That was a challenge to pipe . Most of these GEs have a washing mashine underneath so we usually run a new hot and cold down to it . Thanks alot Lchmb .

    specialized work

Thanks again for these posts Ron, really outstanding work. And to think you guys do this in only one day. I always show your jobs to the new hires to keep things in perspective. And, we like the way you do all you can for service and parts replacement. I was complaining about a direct vent fireplace I worked on recently that was tight, your jobs remind me to keep quiet. I'll bet the H.O. doesn't have a clue there are probably fewer than a handful of men who could do this level of work on these kind of installs.

    this is the first

Time I've seen a GE wall hung! did it use the same type of compressor that the old grey rouund ones used?

Great work as usual. I do hope your boss appreciates you. Thank God our old Yorks were all ground level, although the model in the corner of the kitchen made for high blood pressure. I am curious, how is it to clean the new equipt. through the top?
