Stealing Copper !!!

25 years ago, when copper was cheap, I was doing a remodel on a victorian tri-plex that had been condemned and vacant for over a year, so the water and electric meters had been pulled. I ordered a new meter and (the afternoon before) checked to be sure everything was turned off. Expecting some minor leaks, I told the water company to leave the meter off. Next day I turn on the the meter and saunter up the hill to the house, which looked like the Titanic going down inside (I was a little quicker getting back to the meter). Overnight someone had carefully unthreaded every single brass fixture (wall-mount faucets, toilet ball-cocks, etc.). No light, no pipe cutting or destruction, pretty clean job. Must have taken all night, and they actually did me a favor, it was all going out anyway, but working at any job for the same time would have paid more. Go figger. I will never forget the sight of straight jets of water bouncing off far walls and ceilings. Awesome

Stolen Copper

Some dumb theives in our area were a little bit luckier than the one taking the wire! But it could have been deadly too. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06167/698823-57.stm
These guys are only going to get to go to jail! They went into a vacant house stealing copper tubing, I guess they couldn't stop with just the water lines. Hey it's almost 3-bucks a pound! Anyway they ripped a copper gas line from a water heater. The gas was still on, they ran, and a little later ka-boom! Luckily, no one was injured. Over the years I always hated having jobs replacing stolen copper, whether it was stolen from my jobs or like in the case of that vacant house. Those Sons of Bee's can undo two days work in less than 15-minutes! The scrap dealer that I use will not buy from anyone that doesn't have a driver's license or other photo ID, for what it's worth. He said that after the price of copper got so high that police detectives were paying him regular visits!

Alumimum siding

A customer l o n g ago was building a place and when his siding people showed up one morning, the alumimum siding they were supposed to install was gone.

He took a ride to the closest scrap yards and there was his siding. He filed a police report and got it back.

This was a long time ago when copper and alumimum were cheap, too.

Oh yea, sorry about the singer. I knew some lady sung it. Also, a few years back someone decided to steal a water tank out of one of our new builds and basically ripped it out without shutting down the gas. At the next call for heat on the furnace, it blew out the lower side wall of the structure. Lucky nobody was killed. Ka-Boom!!! Also, Steamhead it scares me that you know the correct answer to my error in song artist...;-) Just kidding.
