gas grilll question

Remonds me of back in the Sixtys when after installing a new gas stove for a grandmotherly woman, I showed her how to light the pilot for the oven compartment. I raised the thermostat, opened the oven door, lite a match, threw it in, slammed the door and jumped out of the way. "OH NO!!" she screamed, "I'M NOT DOING THAT !!". Then I showed her the real way. Push in the t'stat after pulling out the broiler drawer to expose the pilot that was all the way in the back while kneeling on the floor and putting my arm into the compartment. She didn't like that either. Then I pulled up the oven floor to expose the burner. That was no good either. Told her she should call the utility company, they were the ones that sold the item. I was the installer only.

my wife turned on the grill the other day and experienced a minor"boom"...she did not close the valve to the main tank the day before, and propane must have come up through the orifices into the grill itself....other than closing the main valve after use, is there anything else I can tighten down to make sure this doesn't happen again?
  • John do you have

a shut off on the grill itself? If you do then it is passing and needs to be replaced.

If the grill did not "light" right away then gas will buildup that will BOOM when it finally does light up.

You do not need a leak to have a boom.

Sometimes, those click-click ignitors do not work the first coupla or so tries.

    My wife used to complain

that that the grill would boom while lighting, I never had a problem. One day I caught her trying to light the burner, she would close the lid turn on the gas stand back then try clicking the ignitor sure enough there was a big boom. Make sure the cover is open when lighting and make sure you light the correct burner first.

    That was

    good, Brad.

This thread brings back a moving experience.

The first grille we owned had to be lite with a match and was in our pool area. As a licensed plumber/gas fitter who needed directions? I saw this little hole in the front where you must light this thing off (oops, wrong hole).

Down goes the cover, on goes the gas, in goes the match and there goes Jack. Twenty feet across the pool area.

Some things you try to forget but you have to love the WALL.
