inside boiler

I have a Burnham V38 steam 18 years old. I had to replace the hot water coil. When I pulled the old one out I could see a build up on the inside about 1/4 inch. I am worried that this might hurt the heat transfer.I do not have an oil problem. Should I clean the boiler ? Do I clean it as per the manufacturing instructions on skimming as if were new? There are no instructions in the installations manual other than skimming. thanks all Tom

chemical treatment needed.
E mail Glenn Stanton @ gstanton@burnham.com & he will probably have a good product recommendation for you to clean with. Or post a thread on here with a note of best chemical cleaner for steam boiler.

We prefer
to flush them out with a hose, under street pressure. Just did this to a misbehaving Dunkirk and it's nice and clean now. With the coil removed from the boiler you should have excellent access for this procedure. And of course the boiler must not be hot when flushing!
We avoid using chemicals in steam boilers- they can be difficult to flush out completely especially if some of the stuff gets out in the system.

cleaning
Steamhead, my only thought was that if it is calcified deposits and hard rust nodules that washing does not get it off w/ the limited access to brush etc. But yes if you can get to the surfaces, washing is easiest and less worry of chemical residue. When I heard 1/4" of build up inside I was not just thinking mud build up. Thanks, jmho, Tim0 -
If it's just the usual mud and sludge
flushing and skimming works well. We hardly ever need anything else in this area since the Baltimore water supply is fairly good- the most it usually needs is a sediment filter. But you're right, calcium would probably need more than that.
