    Stereo

Scott, recently by accident I put something together for my bedroom. Had a set of altec speakers and subwofer from
a computer sitting in the attic. For xmas my wife had given me a digital tuned am/fm pocket and headphone radio.
OK for the trips I like but it to was sitting around most of the time. I married the two together with the appropriate cable and I have a butt-kicking bedroom stereo! I even dredged up a cd player (portable) and have a little switch box to go from am/fm to cd. the sound is wonderful from the Altec computer speakers

    Depends

Are you looking at a new one, or used? Found an old HUGE Sansui 4-channel reciever at a junk store this past Sunday, $20 took it. Great shape, works, but no manual. junk stores, yard sales good, some Wal-Marts, most Radio Shacks carry new. I was really impressed tho with the DeWalt boom box. Great sound!

    start at a repair shop

You probably have a local hole-in-the-wall stereo repair shop near you. Frequently, that's where the hardcore guys can be found these days. If they don't have what you need either new or used, they can tell you where to find it.

    Its really Sad

I went to a Tweeters last night and after about ten minutes of blank looks I said, " Maybe I'm not making my self clear. I want a stereo to play Cd's in my office ? "

I got a blank look and " Ya I understand we just don't have anything like that ... "

    ?????

Whats worse is the best advice from the wall is ... check out second hand shops ????

Whats going on in the world of MUSIC ?????

    Scott

    what's wrong?

I'm not sure. ipods, itunes, single downloads, music sharing and other things leading to the death of the album probably aren't helping. Certainly the music industry can't seem to figure out, either. Caught an ad during the Sox game the other day showing a couple guys ripping a roomful of vinyl to an ipod-like device to satisfy a girlfriend sick of the clutter of vinyl everywhere. Sure the thing probably has some good sound, but does it sound earth-shakingly good like what we're after? Probably not.

I have a really nice pair of old Snell speakers. When my old amp died, I found the sound gurus at my local repair shop and they hooked me up with a worthy replacement. Short version: they know what people like us really want and where to get it. All that quality equipment that people mentioned in the music thread a month or so ago? These guys know all that and then some. It's a cult anymore.

Maybe think of Tweeter as the Home Depot of home entertainment, and it will make more sense as to why you need to look elsewhere.

Tweeter's is for high-end stuff. A simple radio+CD player is a cheap item these days, given that even DVD players cost under $50. You want something from Target or equivalent. Maybe Best Buy. If not, try www.froogle.com (Google's shopping service).

    Why CD's?

With satellite radio, why would anyone settle for just listening to discs, ipods, etc? Any type of music, talk or sports anytime you want it.

    The beauty of.........

......this radio, in particular, is I can also copy up to 10 hours of CDs as .mp3 or .wma files. When I puchase CDs, the first thing I do is copy them to my computer and burn copies, while never using the original. Once it's in the computer, it can be transferred to almost any device.

    Scott I Agree

I want albums not songs! I have 3000+ CD's, 3 complete stereo's, Sirius Satellite (Howard is King). I listen to complete CD's as often as I can. Black Sabbath-Masters of Reality is on at this moment. As Roger Daltry says "Long Live Rock, I Need It Every Day" Gotta go, need to crank Children of the Grave...

Here's something for you, Leslie West, Theme From An Imaginary Western. He has always had a killer tone!

I've still got a stereo in my house, and one at my shop.
When I got to thinking about it, I went to Ebay and typed in Pioneer SX-6 (the kind I have at home) and found quite a few of them for sale. It is a good stereo, lots of power. You can plug a cd player, record player, or cassette player into it.
I found the pioneer's way cheaper than what I paid for it at TG&Y many moons ago!!!

That's a great song, from Mountain's "Climbing", that you never hear anymore, Rick. They were at Woodstock, and also did a song called "For Yasger's Farm" on that album, along with "Mississippi Queen". But I wouldn't recommend them for a show nowadays - very sloppy. Felix Pappalardi played bass like Jack Bruce in the original group, in spite of having flipper fingers. He produced Cream's albums, and also played various orchestral instruments on them. Fascinating life - his wife wrote songs for Mountain and Cream, but also shot him to death in their own bed.
