Stacked boilers

We have done it before. Find a good welding shop and have them make you a stand. If you dont have alot of ceiling height rent a genie lift. I have never done it with the weil mclain boilers only Viessmann. Do those boilers vent off the top or out the back. Venting would bo the only issue i would have.

    Stacked Boilers

I have a mechanical room that is way to small 5 feet by 16 feet.

I need to install 2 boilers oil fired any brand my choice and 2 60 gallon Indirects. One indirect will operate the home most of the time only a caretaker and his wife. The other will turn on when the home is being used on summer weekends. This way we have 120 gallons when needed 5 or 6 times a year but only store 60 most of the time.
The system has 12 hightemp zones (BB,radiators, airhandles, heat exchanger)and 8 low temp radiant zones two temps 105 and 125.

Looking at the room and service ability of the system. The only way I can get all this to work is by stacking the boilers. I was thinking of 2 WM Ultra oils all tapings in back. I would need to relocate one of the boilers aquastats from under the cover to the side but that looks like it.

Has anyone ever done this stacking 2 oil fired boilers or have any sugestions.

    How

about 2 Viessmann or Buderus Indirects with the boilers on top? Doesn't take up any more floor space than the indirects alone. If that doesn't work, what about a Burnham LE or similar low mass boiler? Very tiny footprint.

    Check out Buderus

Their boilers stack on their indirects.Just size the indirects larger then needed. The water tank sits hozontal rather then a normal vertical. You loose a little transfer eff from hozontal wated hot water. So size it larger.Their Logamatic control can be fitted with a board to control two boilers and another card can be added to control low and high temperature heating loops ..Tie them into their pump stations for a top shelf job..

The WM vent out the back I wanted to use viessmann but they have a larger foot print

That was my origanal plan but the boiler room is so narrow you would have to pu them in a row and you need min of 2 feet in front of them bolth for service. that would put one of them alost in front of a door. It would also make it kinda tight to service the primary loop on the wall.

    If those WM

clean through the top then you need 24 inches seperation and room enough to get the tops off unhindered.

The condensing Monitor FCX seems to be especially compact. Perhaps stacked and maybe even sideways.

Last I heard, low-sulfur oil is required but at least I also hear that it's becoming widely available.

    my 2 cents

    Hi Mike,

We see this alot. Here's some tricks...

1.Mount the high temp loop from the ceiling,as high as possible, basically around the perimeter of the room at a constant elevation- this frees up acres of valuable wallspace for zone piping and also allows for lots of piping choices. Our systems sometimes look like a giant copper spider.

    2. Go with a 80 or 120 gallon indirect for simplicity and space. Then no one has to switch things back and forth..

    3. Use your favorite boiler. Mine happens to be the WM ultra oil.

    Hope this helps!

    Rusty

i like what you just said.

sounds better when it comes out of someone else, than it does when you are the one saying it, however...

i would build some stands..or in this day and age i belive that i would marry two boilers from different manufacturers one above the other...

my buddy hung one off the ceiling in a red iron cage type lash up a few years back...

    2 people need 60 gal?

Sounds like a single 80 would be more then enough when a few more visit. Maybe get a reverse indirect with a slightly larger single boiler. During the summer the boiler will easily keep a Turbomax or Ergomax indirect pumping out hot water non stop.

The home has 11 Bathrooms in it. The sole purpose of the home is to entertain clients. So when it is being used the demand is very high. Almost like a hotel. But a large ergomax or turbomax might be perfict.

Mike, have a look at the Solaia

all connections to this boiler series are in the rear, too. The one in the pic is the seven-section, with a net rating of 181 MBH. In this installation it drives an old gravity system and a 50 gallon Phase 3 indirect thru a basic primary-secondary piping system.

    a stack of 3

Clean Burns in a carwash. The owner supplied and racked these 3- 350K's and I built the 2-1/2" vertical primary loop to conserve space.

    put more doors in

I've had the same problem before and made sure the fronts of the boilers were right in front of a door. I've even had the owner install two doors right next to each other or 6' wide double doors. Then when you need to service you open the doors outwards and you have plenty of room to service. 5' X 16' is defintely real tight to do 2 + 2, and I don't see how you can put them side by side in
5', but if you stack the boiler on top of the tank and aim them toward doors on each end of the long dimension you can would have the exhausts near each other and doors to open for service. I have no idea if your particular situation can accomodate these doors, but it's a thought.
    good luck

    Biasi

Biasi also pipes all from the rear and cleans from the front. It is a smidge narrower than the weil mclain.

Footprint is one thing, but also remember manufacturer's clearances. Biasi is 9" for the sides. Unsure if that is pretty standard among oil-fired boilers.
