Is this on the intake of the GB?
Sorry, I missed the post with the problem.

It's filtration by the Reini Confiney ....
Remember the problem with the dusty horses and the clogging GB condensate trap? Well, I sicked my superb service director Tim Reini on the problem. We discussed a tin can with an automotive type filter in it, or a 5 gallon bucket with a spa type of filter in it, but I told him to use his imagination, that it needed to look fairly neat and compact, be accessible and serviceable.
Lookey what he brung me :-)
The filter membrane is the vacuum filter element out of a small portable vacuum cleaner. Not shown is the other no hub coupling for holding the whole shebang together in line.
This is the three inch model, but it could be set up for 4" as well. I'm thinking of putting it on every mod con we do to see what affect it has on the annual clean up requirements.
Good Job Tim!
Whaddya think Wallies

yeah but...
seems like a good solution to the dirty, dusty combustion air problem, but what is it they say? For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. The questions I have are what is the pressure drop across the filter when new and after 8 or 10 months? and considering the need for a balanced intake and exhaust system on mod cons, is there enough unbalance between the two for there to be a concern? And of course, will the manufacturer put their blessing on it. I'm not trying to rain on your parade in any way because I think it's a really cool idea and my first reaction was - I want one of those. But my nature is to question.

edit: after re-reading your post, I'm wondering if I am thinking of the problem that you are addressing...0 -
What?

nice
add one of those flow indicators like they use on tractor and heavy equipment air filters to notify when cleaning is needed.

Something like that...........
I doubt if the draft fan could develop enough negative pressure to budge one of those indicators. An engine is like a positive displacement type pump whereas the draft fan is more like a centrifugal design.
I've toyed around with the same idea and have a boiler (which shall remain nameless) running with a modified filter "bag" out of a Hitachi shop vac. It's a very free flowing synthetic material that is designed to pass large volumes of air without restriction while catching virtually everything that comes along the air stream. I installed it last fall but summertime with the associated dust and bugs will be the real test.0 -
This filter shipped with
a Polaris I installed this winter. Mostly screen with a thin plastic fabric inside.

Darren...
It is the intake on a GB. THe GB services a barn. The horses in the stalls outside like to roll around in the dirt, rasing a lot of dust. This dust gets sucked into the boilers combustion process, 30 feet above the ground and gets washed out by the condensate and gets trapped, where else, in the trap. It eventually will completely clog the condensate drain system to the point that the boiler won't/can't fire. Took about a year for it to happen. THe GB does hot water and heat for the barn's human areas, and DHW for the horse wash bay.
THe stuff that came out of the trap was like a silky slime, and smelled just like horse dander.
As for time between filter replacement duration, I am not sure, but we'll know when its time, 'cause the boiler won't fire if it can't get air. Only time will tell for sure. The boiler wil get an annual inspection at a minimum, possibly more as needed.
He're the trap in the condition I found it in.

Moving the air intake?
In a past life, I had to deal with an air compressor that was used in a wood working shop that was burning thru air filters like crazy. The fix was to relocate the air intake to an outside window.
Perhaps the air intake for the GB could be relocated to an outside source away from the dusty horse dander.
Or, a timed splash of water thru the trap, to wash away the accumulated slime, before it builds up to problematic level.

Possibly...
... using one of those Dwyer differential pressure gauges that's used with a blower door to measure flow restriction caused by the filter, both clean and dirty will give you the info you need to know when it's time for cleaning. Measuring in pascals, they are quite sensitive.

Not that I don't like it and all but methinks it may clog fairly quickly on you and start tripping the unit on air flow sensor. I'd consider a shallow box designed to fit a standard sized air filter on one side and your PVC on the other so you're drawing through a lot more surface area. I'd probably go with a pleated filter too. 20 x 20 x 1 maybe, just to toss a number out there.0 -

Or one of THOSE might work...
Why am I suddenly reminded of Claude Aikens, air horns and "Big Wheels a Rollin' "?0 -
Got to thinking
One of those "Air Bear"s with a plenum on one side might work, or at least a 4" pleated filter instead of a 1". Also, you could pretty much plug the PVC into any side you wanted except maybe the bottom (to keep it from collecting dirt).0 -
not enough airflow...
better off rigging in a shopvac filter or a truck air filter, and i you are relly getting wet stuff - you might concider a shopvac with it's motor removed and the unit hooked to the dischaged port0
