Rings for Pex or Not?

I have found uponors system to be very reliable. I personally use the composite core (multicore) and love the product. The tool is bulky and heavy but works nicely and I have never had a leak. If your fittings are in the wall most pex fittings when properly installed are considered reliable. Any crimp fitting because of its design will be more prone to problems, but is faster and less exspensive. They have come a long way since their initial appearance. Pex rings and Apr in my opinion the most reliable and still fairly easy to install. In situations where I have to repair or change a line in the slab I use the apr fittings from either rahau or uponor whichever is available at the time and wrap with 10 mil tape. (Should) be a lifetime fix. I would not intentionally ever put a fitting underslab no matter how good they claim it to be its not as good as a solid piece of pipe and you are taking a calculated risk. How much risk do you want to take, just look at the failure rate of the fittings you may be using, even one failure in a slab can be a major headache.

    are you thinking...

of having joints imbedded in the slab? Uponor has great stuff but so do others....I still would not do joints in the slabs...kpc

RIngs are not reccomended in slab or any other app like that they make special mechanical compression fittings and ther only for emg anyways. But as far as crimp compared to uponor or ohter brands i think crimp is a lot faster and easier to work with . But it really what your used to

    In concrete

If you feel you need to make a joint in cement, if your using a stainless steel sleeve or copper ring, I recommend that you wrap it completely with electrical tape to prevent contact the the acids in the cement.

As mentioned above, its preferable to avoid joints in or beneath the slab.

    Copper crimp rings

have been my main stay going all the way back to the PB days.

They work fine, look good, are affordable, and readily available.

Some of the improvements tried over the years haven't impressed me. I.e. the odekar (sp)and it's made in China knock offs :)

Why argue with sucess, if the shoe fits...

    ProPex Rings

Being that Uponor pex and rings have 100% thermal and elastic memory, many years from now that joint will still be trying to compress at the joint.

John, why aren't joints good for under slab? How would you make a repair? You wouldn't take up the whole slab. The concrete cannot hurt the pex or the ring or the fitting.

    Great product!

Rick What up just saying that you only put fittings under slab if you have to and they make repair mechanical fittings for just that purpose.

    I think

Rodney needs to elaborate, apparently, on just where he intends to use these connections. As he said: "I am getting ready to do a in slab radiant project". Where do you "KNEE-JERKERS" get off assuming he is "getting ready" to put joints embedded in the slab!? Read the GD question!

    Uponor does?

I know Onix has repair kits. A Uponor repair kit consists of a coupling and 2 rings. Right? I could be wrong...

Ok lets clear the air. The last thing I want is to place a join under the slab and have not intention of doing so unless it has to be done. My main question to which would be better over all. I have used crimp ring; however I have not used the Upnor method. As far as time or labor I would rather spend a little extra knowing it is will be working corectly for years to come.

Thanks guys maybe this will help on the thoughts.
