sorta on the Old side made by Cat...

  • Is it just me, or.

It seems that we are experiencing a number of stuck diaphragms on diaphragmatic type expansion tanks on systems with rubber hose connected to them. Is anyone else experiencing this phenomenon?

    TIA

    Stuck

Stuck to what? I have had to initially fill the system to 25psi or so to get the diaphragm to come loose from the inside of the expansion tank, but those were new tanks and after that they were fine. They were Elbi tanks.
  • Stuck to the inner face of the tank

No expansion acceptance ability, leaking relief valve...

why don't they make expansion tanks like

well tanks? Put the fluid in the rubber bladder not the tin tank.

Often times premature expansion tank failures are indications of a non barrier tube system. Or other sources of O2 ingress:)

Even barrier pex systems, that operate at elevated temperatures, seem to dissolve tanks faster. EVOH barriers only LIMIT O2 ingress.

i am generous with the air precharge..

Seems to help for this, also you loose ½ lb of pressure across the diaphragm every year, so they have to be rechecked – all my exp tanks are preceded by a ballvalve, draincock, and union, to facilitate easy isolation for recharge

    thought

I have not had much experience with rubber hose type systems, but I do have a question: Is it normal practice to use either a lubricant or a sealant on the fittings during assembly? Excess could run through the system and seal the bladder in place.
