How to pump???

My hope is to tie back into the sprink system with filtered river water. I have no idea what type of filters this would take, and if an electric motor would be better than a gas motor. Goal is to have it totally auto. What about priming the pump? any way of making that auto as well???

Wife & I are making an offer on the old Fisher Mansion...of Fisher Beer...here in town. This property has water rights to pull water from the Jordan river, which the acre sits on. How does one pull from a 'silty' river for irrigation, and what is the best method of filtering? House is great...11,225 sq'...but has FA heat. I will put some pretty rads in to heat the top floors...

  • Nice Tim,

some "fixer-upper" work there,,,but you can handle-it. As far as that silty river goes,,perhaps a pump with an open faced impeller and a sand filter, like they use on swimming pools would help. As you only want it for irrigation right?
BTW-Notice how I didn`t even ask what you were gonna try irrigating?

It has been a group home for recovering alcoholics since '60 or so, but most of the orig features are there. I was wondering what type of rads it had prior to seeing it, but no rads...FA!!! Oh well...Dining is 40' long X 17' wide, and main has 14' ceilings, top floors have 12' ceilings. Carriage house is 2600 sq', 2-story and has 2 fireplaces. House has 6 FP's...

  • I assume,

your talking about lawn or garden sprinklers, not fire service. Sure,, you could get a gasoline driven, close-coupled pump with electric start and run-it from a clock-timer. As far as filtering goes, I still think a pool type sand filter is your best bet as properly sized it will give large flow. You`ll have to build some kind of "box" below the rivers waterline to keep floating debris out of the pumps suction. But don`t bother with a foot-valve in there, just put a check-valve right at the pump, if your "vertical-lift" is within 25`, holding prime won`t be a prob. Just put something over the rivers suction line to keep out snakes and such. Not too sure the kinds of water-critters in Utah, but up here our prob was zebra mussels.

    silty water

A settling tank? Place it beside your solar storage tank(s), make provision for flush & clean?

Looks like a combo of the settle tank & the above mentioned electric pumps will do. How are rainwater collection tanks flushed? Sucked out like a septic? We get rocky mountain rattlers here...but beavers are the big issue. There are two that we were told about. Fresh bark eaten all over! Possible muskrats...

    Why Not a Well

I would sink a well , install a pump and forget the filtration , snakes , mussels , water rats and sea weasels .... No ?

why bother filtering for lawn sprinkling?

it's just another energy user. The filter adds pressure drop and would require frequent backwashing, more water waste.

There may be good stuff in that silty water like run off from the ag fields that drain into the river.

Or chemicals from the Kennecot mining operation upstream :)Have it tested either way if you plan on irrigating a produce garden.

I'd go with a trash pump powered by an electric motor. Much more reliable for timer stop and starts. Also quieter and longer lasting. With only one moving part) compared to a recripocating 30% efficient gasoline engine. Probably cheaper to purchase also.

Possibly even a submersible for brackish water use. Try one of the many pump companys in Salt Lake, House of Pumps would know. Many specialize in irrigation pumps.

I'd worry more about the roof before the lawns :0

Looks like a fun project. Buy it right for the money, don't get nostalgic.

A roof for the carriage house is first. It really is all about the money....all of the above for about $400K. You could not touch it for less than over a million in the Avenues. I thought filter for the sprinkler heads themselves. I am sure all that crud can't be shoved through the heads, but I will investigate further. My rights are for the river...not well water. We would not want to sink a well when there is a giant river right there on the surface anyway. The house is really in tact. Did I mention 6 fireplaces, and 1300 sq' of heated shop space, as well as my own private office and a workout room AND a gun room? Too good to be true!!!!

    Thanks for the input!!! Tim
