Air Vent locations

not so much for efficiency (though it would improve) but so the steam would have to make a 90° turn before entering the vent. This would help keep dirt and water out of the vent.

Air vent location and system efficiency

I have a one pipe steam system with a number of
hot water radiators in my home. The air vent on many of these
radiators is at the very top of the radiator (instead of half-way to 2/3 of the way down the side of the radiator).
My question is, how much system efficiciency am I losing by
not plugging the vent holes and having new holes drilled in the correct location on these radiators. Would it be worth spending the money (in saved fuel costs) to have a professional re-drill the vent holes? Thanks.

    If the heat output is

fine as is, leave it alone!

In most of today's homes, no or little steam ever reaches the last section anyhow. 99% of all steam condensing already happenned by the time the steam made it to the last inch of the last section.

Unless the top mounted vent is subject to damage from sticking up, leave it alone.

If that rad makes noise, it may become worse if you move the vent hole. Then too, it could be better. If it works well as is...

    Leave it alone.
