I am trying to decide on which direction to go, I have an old vapor coal boiler converted a while back to steam and oil. I am assuming super inefficient. I have 2 choices as i see it. Choice a: I can stay on oil and get a new burnham V8 or mega steam or choice b: if i switch to gas (which i already have in the house but would have to upgrade some piping) my local utility would give me a free dunkirk steam boiler and i would just have to pay for lablor. not sure if i want to switch from oil....thoughts. What kind of efficiency gain do you think I would get from choice A.
Second question: It was proposed to me to split the house into two zones. Keep the upper floors steam heat and put in a new smaller steam boiler and convert the downstairs to hot water and put in a new HE hot water boiler. Would running two boilers be more efficient than one new steam boiler???

options
My opinion is that if you keep steam, then keep steam everywhere. Converting steam radiators and piping to hot water has many potential problems. Radiators can leak and they may not be connected at the top of the sections. Also re-piping the whole thing is a lot of labor. You are better off spending the money you would have spent on conversion on decreasing the heat load of the house.
Very likely, the best option is to stay oil, install a new steam boiler and give the entire system a tune-up, possibly adding thermostatic radiator valves.0 -
Stay with oil and go with the Megasteam
You'll be happier in the long run. Mad Dog

I agree
with Andrew, Robert, Mad Dog and Kevin. Keep the steam, and get a Burnham MegaSteam. Nothing else even comes close.

And zoning
is easy with steam too. You can put in thermostatic valves on the air vents (one pipe) or at the supply valves (two pipe) and have radiator by radiator control. It's just crazy to chop up the system for zoning when there are much easier ways of getting even better control.
