Before/After MPO - DF

This is an MPO Brian and his crew installed a couple of weeks ago replacing an old RS steel boiler. The MPO's are a solid boiler and the burner is nice and quiet. - DF

Nice job guys.
Nice to see they were thinking of the future too! (that 1" ballvalve for the expected indirect right after the air vent)
I am waiting for the right job to try one of these boilers. Scott, Glenn Stanton and myself stood in the Burnham rolling heatmaker...and had a conversation at normal level while the MPO lagged to it ran only feet away. Quiet indeed. Chris0 -
Neat, Tidy and Easy to Service
Happy Owner I am sure. I like the future valve that Chris noted but it is also the little things, like the end-of-header drain valve off of a 45 elbow. Not a 90 but a 45. Looks like a signature of sorts. Nice work!0 -
Notice
the boiler drain piped around from the back of the boiler so it can be reached easier. Nice! WW

Neat and Tidy
Very nice Dan! Lots of attention to detail there. The pro-press piping looks great. We now have a press machine. I am looking foward to using it on copper. I have only used it on the Wirsbo multicor press fittings so far. It works great!
One question for you. Any reason you went to circs instead of zone valves? Looks great as always!

Circs
Thanks, all for the nice comments.
Darin, we switched to circulators because of uneven heating. The baseboard zones were of various lengths and some zones did not get sufficient heat, even though the boiler was properly sized. The issue was lack of flow under certain conditions. The multiple circulators solved the problem. You might notice that the far right pump splits into two zones with Caleffi zone valves. - DF

Loved the
uni-strut extension brackets for the main supply blk pipe. What's that bar/bracket called and what's its shape? Is that an adaptation made in the field? Or an off-the-shelf item? Handy as hell I'd say.
Beautiful job.
How long before the press fittings begin leaking(;-o)0 -
Brackets
Ken,
Thanks for the compliment. The brackets are off the shelf and come in multiple sizes and lengths. We got these from Leo at Argco but you can also get them from Hilti.
Here are a couple more photos. -DF

Love the
wire trays! Neatens everything up. I see people going nuts with diamond plate, painted woods and special mounting boards, and wire hanging everywhere. Those trays are cheap and make a nice job even nicer.
I see the strut rails are just more strut, not a special bracket. I couldn't quite see that in the other photos. The ell brace that allows the bracket to mount to the wall rail, just the standard heavy gage ell for all 90's?0 -
propress
Darin, did you say you are using a propress tool with uponor multicore. Where did you buy the heads for this, I was under the impression that only viega pex heads were available for propress. I like the new metal handles on the ball valves.0 -
Brackets
Ken,
The brackets are basically channel strut with a mounting flange welded on one end. Look here:

Scott
I have been using my propress with jaws I bought from Wirsbo that work on Multicore and fit in my propress machine. Wirsbo is phasing them out though and selling a new smaller pressing tool made only for multicore. Here's a hint how to get the head if they run out. I just bought the 3/4 jaws from Wirsbo and when they came they had the REMS label on them. If Wirsbo empties their supply you can get them though a REMS distributor. Hope this helps. WW

great
I like the install and the little extra things as mentioned before.
Do you guys find that the EZ-Headers are not always plumb? Another thing we run into is when using the Webstone Isolation flanges directly on the EZ-Header, they bottom out and then the flange isn't where you'd like it to be. This is why you used the copper/sweat iso flanges?

Header
Hi Ted,
Thanks for the comments. We occaisionally get a speed header that is "tweaked" in shipping but they can usually be bent back into shape. I think it gives a solid base for the pumps and a neat, uniform appearance.
We had quite a few leakers with the threaded Webstone flanges so we went to the sweat version. -DF

Nice work
Nice work. As mentioned in other post, the little touches to help service the "system" and the "pro look " installation are inspiring.0 -
x-pansion tank
Good looking boiler job Dan. Can you please tell me what make and size expansion tank you used. Is that a boiler drain valve on the tee just before the air seperator? What is its purpose? Thanks, Jim.0 -
Multi-core heads
We bought a REMS tool and Multi-Core heads are available for it. We have the 3/4" and 5/8" heads for MC and 3/4" thru 1.25" for propress.

X-Tank
Jim,
The expansion tank is a floor mounted Extrol tank made by Amtrol. I believe the model # is SX-30.
The valve you see before the air separator is a boiler drain. It allows you to purge each loop and the boiler without changing the hose. This concept is outlined in Dan's book titled "Pumping Away". -DF
