Steamhead: Thank you for your advice. FYI the boiler is a JO-TW 100.

    Hartford Loop and Main vents

My parents house has steam heat, 3 section Peerless boiler installed about 20 yrs ago. Original boiler was coal fired and installed before 1920. Supply and return piping is original.
Question 1 - do all steam systems require a Hartford Loop? Plumbing installation is similar to pg 3 in that it is a one pipe, parallel flow, dry return set up. Ref ITT web site http://www.hoffmanspecialty.com/pdf/submittals/hs-901a.pdf .
Question 2 is related to same diagram - there are two 2.5 inch risers comming off the top of the boiler each supplying their own loop. Loop "A" starts three feet above the boiler and runs for 51 feet horizontally supplying 5 radiators before making a u-turn into a 1.5 " return running 30 feet back to the boiler. The vent that is at the end of the return (as in the diagram) is a Dole 84. Loop "B" also starts three feet above the boiler, and runs 25 feet horizontally and has a return run of 16 feet in 1.5" pipe with a Vinton 45 vent at the end. Are these vents sufficient in their location at the end of the return piping? They are both right at the elbow as pictured in the diagram and not 15" back. Hope it all made sense to you. Thanks for your help

    The vents are too small

I'd use two Gorton #2 vents on the longer main and one on the shorter one. The location on the returns should be OK.

By the time that Peerless boiler was made, all manufacturers required Hartford Loops. Is that a JO series boiler (might be JO-T)?
