I have a house built in 1930. It is a single pipe steam system. I am doing renovations on the second floor and want to know if the pipes coming up from the basement will ever go bad, leak. Some have 90 elbows before they go to the valves and after a new floor is installed they will not be accessible. Don't want the pipes to start leaking after everything is redone. Pipes are all original.

I'm with kevin....it is rare to see ............................

A residential steam pipe goe bad - especially risers. I have seen some failure in steam lines without good pitch, where condensate lay in the pipe 24/7 365. I have worked on steam systems from the late 1800s whose pipes were in great shape. I would try to insulate with whte fiberglass pipe insulation (the good stuff) as much as possible. Mad Dog
