    FIN-TUBE RADIANT BTWN FLOOR JOISTS!!!

Looked at a boiler replacement job where the homeowner has 3/4" fin-tube(element only) hanging between every other floor joist! There is no mixing valves being used, and no insulation is under the fin-tube, so it heats the basement too. Any coments?

    See

Somthing new every day right. That basement must be tosty. I have seen staple up hung 3/4" from the subfloor with sir cavity and, tube set in heat transfer plates but never that. Is the basement vented ? I can't think of a reson why that wouldnt work but I would tell them they really need to insulate the under floor. You mentioned the lack of a mixing valve. I normally set my staple up without heat transfer plates at 150 deg. WT. I think this would act about the same way. Its amazing what you see out there isnt it.

    Does it work ok?

There are plenty of those fin tube floor warming systems out there working just fine. If the customer is happy and warm and the heat balance is fine between the upper and lower rooms, I'd let the sleeping dog lie :)

Replace or upgrade the boiler if needed, consider reset controls for less cycling, possibly a mod con, and carry on.

  • Never know is right, for awhile anyway,,,,,

I saw a job being installed this way a while back. The guy is putting .75" hardwood on the floor finish above and the joists are 16" CC. One manufacturer told me only 140* would be required, but I "donno"? Time will tell!

    Installs like that

can, and do work if the loads are reasonable. There are thousands of the Wirsbo suspended tube systems in service. i'd like to see an air space all around the tube, and the insulation below is important.

  • Agreed HR,

IMO this method will heat the joists "real" well and stripe the floor above.
