an indirect tank is a pressure vessel with an internal coil...no flame, hence indirect. I would use a stainless tank for this purpose, it will last longer and handle the higher temperatures. The Viessmann V300 tanks can be directly connected to a low pressure steam system.

An indirect tank can be connected to a steam boiler, usually from beneath the water line. It requires expertise to do this, and instructions can be found in the hot tech topics.

    Tankless DHW for 4-storey townhouse.

We're looking into the possibility of switching to tankless domestic hot water for our four storey row house in Brooklyn, NY. We live in the house and have a rental on the top floor with a young couple currently renting.

How do we calculate size requirements?
    What are venting issues?
    Is it worth considering?

    Thanks

    If...

If you have a boiler system, it is far more effective to install an indirect DHW tank, rather than a tankless heater. The difference is flow rates. A 4 unit structure will require at least 10-12gpm flow.

The indirect tank does not require venting, and will provide adequate flow rates for the units.

Thanks for the reply, Paul. To be clear, our house is four storeys, not units. We have two units. Ourselves and our tenants, four people total. Except for occasional house guests.

I don't understand what is an "indirect DHW tank". We do have an oil-fired boiler for steam heat which provides DHW during the heating season.
