water comes out of Vari-valve on radiator

As the heat comes up I get water comming out of the Vari-valve on the radiator.
All new vari-valves,New Utica 3 section, New dry return, water level is normal, 2 inch main about 26 ft. long, 1 inch copper dry return just under the supply.
There is a vent #883 on the return about 18 in. before it drops down to the boiler return.
When the radiator got hot and started to sqirt water i removed the #883. water came pouring out, and of course the radiator stopped leaking.
Presure trol is the additive type, set to shut down @ 1.5 psi.
Thanks in advance

Is the radiator pitched properly?
I can remember a flooded steam radiator I encountered from improper pitch and a partially closed and plugged radiator valve.
A new angle valve, proper pitch, and pressure washing some junk from inside the radiator solved the problem for me.

Water is backing up from the return
is the return above or below the waterline? If above, is it pitched back toward the boiler?

reply to Norm & Steamhead
Thanks for the help,
Norm, the radiator has a good pitch, valve is all the way open.
Steamhead, Return line is overhead, has a pitch, but i forgot to say there is no main vent at the end of the 2 inch supply. Has not had one for 55 years. I did put in a new boiler, maybe it needs the main vent?
Thanks, Tom0 -
Yes you do need a main vent
measure the length and diameter of the steam main and we'll tell you what you need.

main vent
Steamhead,
Main is 2in. x 26 ft. plus another 3ft. from top of boiler to the ceiling.
Thanks ,

Use
two Gorton #1 or Hoffman #75 vents at the end of the main. If there's no tee to put them in, you'll have to have a 1/2" pipe-thread hole drilled and tapped. You will probably want a pro to do this unless you're pretty handy.
