Flue Pipe
Saw this in a boiler room in an apartment building on Capitol Hill. We are going to re-pipe a one-pipe steam system. I will also give them an alternate to fix this mess. I can hear it now.. "The water heaters are fine - just fix the boiler!".... -DF

Fix the boiler...........
......then have them sign-off on the water heater thing if they don't have you remedy the issues. State the fact that it is dangerous and mail it to them certified so they have to sign for it. CYA

Hmmm...
...combustion under an open-able window. The heater/s need to be elsewhere. Heatboy's right. I'd document it all with your bid and keep a copy so when someone gets hurt, you don't get dragged over hot coals.

Out of nowhere I heard the Home Depot theme song play and a voice saying "You can do it. We can help."0 -
local authority having jurisdiction
Just wait till your local Inspector sees this one .0 -
All that is missing is
"Danger, Danger Will Robinson!" But this danger is real.
Red Tag Sale anyone?0 -
Its simple
With the enegry crunch going on, this new setup replaces the heat smoke pipe dampers of the 70's any time you slow the heated vent gas from going up the chimney you keep the heat in the unit i also herd Washington might have a pantened on it
this has to be a joke who would in there wright mind would leave this ?????

Look who made the heaters
Sears- after some experiences I've had with their people, I'd take a bet one of their hacks put that mess in. If they won't have it fixed, maybe you could be the little bird that told the WSSC inspectors about it......

Not WSSC. DC Plumbing. Most of the Inspectors are missing in in-action.

WSSC
I doubt your buddy Ed at WSSC would have let this slip through.
Thanks for the pic, though. Good illustration for teaching how not to do it. Wanna have fun? Ask everyone to count all the deficiencies and see all the diverse opinions you get.
I'll start with the TPR drain tubes missing.0
