    Bring aspirin.

Big Ugly Italian, NYC Friday, April 20

    Here are the details:

Dinner will be at Via Delle Zoccolette.

    (VEE-ah DEL-eh zo-co-LEH-teh)

95 Ave A, at the north-west corner of East 6th St.

It will be a family style wine dinner consisting of:

a Prosecco (Italian champagne) reception at 7pm.

Next we will be served trays of bruschetta, toasted bread slices with various toppings and a suitable white wine.

Next will be a course of assorted salads and a red Sangiovese.

Pasta courses follow with two Italian reds for you to try at the table.

Main courses will be a Mediterranean salmon dish and roasted lamb. You don’t have to choose, you can have a serving of either or both. A good Barbera wine will accompany this course.

Then we’ll finish up with some sweet Italian dessert wine, such as Moscato or a good grappa (which, if you haven’t had it, tastes something like paint thinner and is best reserved to drink on a dare).

The cost is $45 per head tax and tip included.

    Here’s the rest:

Please arrive on time and join us upstairs or arrive earlier and have a not-included drink at the bar.

The restaurant can offer this meal to us if we are paying CASH ONLY.

YOUR CREDIT CARDS ARE NO GOOD at this dinner.
There are lots of ATMs nearby if you need one later but please show up with $45.
    Exact change, if possible.

If you would like anything else at the bar, it will be extra and you will have to pay for it as it is served to you.
I know this next sentence is going to start trouble but, you might be able to pay for extras from the bar with a tab and a credit card at the end of the night but that’s between you and the server. Dinner must be cash at the door.

There will be a coat check and the bartender and servers will be taken care of, but if you feel like it is warranted, please feel free to leave your own gratuity on the table or hand it to who you feel deserves it most.

So far, I’ve got 35 people on the list. There is room for more, but not many.
Now’s the time to RSVP if you think you’d like to but haven’t.

I've been assured by the chef that any special dietary needs will be met with pleasure.

It’s going to be a great time and I, for one, am looking forward to it.

Sorry for the long post, I'm just trying to cover all the bases.

    What have I left out?

Darin and I will also need lodging. (Unless someone wants to drive us to Maddog's house after the BU. Un-announced of course!)

    Who's Who!!

What a roll call!! It would surely be worth the trip out east for this midwesterner to hang with the cream of the right coast crop. It would be great to meet some new faces and reaquaint with some I haven't seen since Wetstock came to Chicago.

I might have attempted a "spur of the moment" but, alas, I'll be on a Hawaii cruise. Since I've never been there I would be lying if I said I'd rather be in New York. I hope you all have a terrific time and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy.

You will have plenty of time to rest up on " 7,8 " and count those tax-free dollars!! . This should be a really great time. I am looking forward to putting some faces to the names I know on here and catching up with some others.

Hotels I think may be economical.

Friends of mine that come to NYC every year stay here:
    Edison Hotel

    This one is very close:
    Howard Johnson Express

    So is this one:
    Off SoHo Suites

If you want to drop some dough, here's where the celebs stay when downtown:

    60 Thompson

    SoHo Grand

    Hotel Gansevoort

    Posted for informational purposes only.
    I'll take no responsibility.

    Also,

there are no public parking lots in this area. You may find a spot on the street if you're coming by car, but leave yourself enough time, and you'll stand a better chance of finding one if you head east toward Avenues B, C and D. The neighborhood is filled with people and safe for walking around.

Sounds like a really good time hanging out in a great Italian restaurant sipping good wine, and hanging out with quality people. Someone bring a digital camera and post those pictures on the wall, so the not so lucky can see what most of the wallies look like.

    Map, subway location

Being a big fan of NYC subway travel (having been a fan for 50+ years of: cheap, fast and always a thrill NYC transportation), the restaurant is NOT near any particular train ("subways," for you who've never been).

The closest is seven blocks away, that being the 'F' train, which stops at 2nd Ave & E. Houston (pronounced how-stin not hew-stin). If you take that train, you get to walk east two blocks, then north on Avenue 'A' five blocks to the joint.

The number '6' train at Astor Place station is about five long blocks away, the 'L' and 'J' are also less than a mile.

For those of you who know of Washington Square Park, almost at the intersection of Bleeker and 5th avenue - the Center of The Village, and always a hot spot for drugs, culture and "street shows" of wildly divergent talent levels - the restaurant is almost due east, about 10 long blocks from the Washington Square Monument at 5th Ave.

    A gentle reminder.

This is a CASH deal, folks - $45 per person, and a little something extra if you fall in love with your waiter and feel like being nice. There are plenty of ATMs in the neighborhood if you need to use one. See you all Friday.
