commercial oil guys out there?

Hello,

I'm working on how to build a snow melt system with several oil boilers. I'm hoping to get up to 1 million BTU input, maybe a bit more. The building code says (Mass) if the boilers are bigger than 400,000 BTU, I need to get into more code issues than I want to deal with (this is new construction, commercial, so you can imagine the hoops I'm jumping already).

So, if I have a basic 275 gallon tank, and the 3 or 4 boilers are 40' to 50' away, how might I run the oil piping? If they all come on at once (unlikely) will I still be OK?

I could easily do up a manifold at the oil tank and run the lines over to each burner (tank and boilers same floor level, ran under slab).

Thanks for any help on this,
Gary

    How

about a supply tank? Solves all the problems and makes future service easy. I think you might want a bigger oil tank. A million BTU input is about 7 gals/HR. 275 gallons won't last long at that rate

Gary, It's really no different than residential. If you run one pipe under the slab then the oil line would be sized for the combined firing rate of all the boilers (nozzle size plus including any incresed input due to oil pressure 100,150,300 or whatever the burners require). With gravaty feed to the burners you would be fine and you could put seperate filters at the burners if you want. JUst make sure the oil line is large enough to get true gravaty feed to the idle burners when the others are running. Firomatic valves at the tank and at the burners. Or you could manifold at the tank and run seperate lines--it's your choice.

If you run two pipe your common piping would have to be sized for the combined PUMPING RATE (gear capacity) of all the burner pumps.

I would check with the burner manufacturer before finalizing the design. Some of the really large burners possibly can't be run on 1 pipe.

    snow melt

I'll be in trouble if it's one nasty storm; I'll probably go home myself! 275 should be good for what I'm doing, I'm on a main drag; lots of oil trucks zooming by.

I'm not familiar with supply tanks, what do they do? I'm a house heating guy.
