Help me please...before I loose more steam!

I've had an annual contract with a Bronx company for several years to clean my one pipe steam boiler (gas)and 24 hour emergency service.

In September, I know the tech did a terrible job cleaning the boiler because he didn't even clean the glass water gauge! There was so much brown gook I couldn't see the water line. Plus they normally remove the vent from the wall and vaccum dirt from the bottom of the chimney. When I asked him why he didn't do it, he said they don't do that anymore.

So, I called the office and asked them to send me someone that knows how to clean a boiler. After much grief, they scheduled an appointment and cancelled. They rescheduled and never showed up.

I happened to read an article in our local paper about how this company now has professional techs working for them and that they originally came from this area in the Bronx blah blah blah. So I figured I would ride them out this one last season.

At 8:00 this evening my boiler stopped working. So I called this Bronx company and the answering service said she would page the tech. One hour goes by, two hours goes by..no phone call, no nothing!! I've called 4 times and was told that he goes off duty at 12:00 (it was 11:50). I told the service to have him call me & let me know if he can or cannot make it as I have an 82 year old mother with health issues and need to make other arrangements for her if he cannot make a service call. Guess what, no call. And the ans. service women told me they probably won't call me till Monday. So what the hell is the point of a 24 hour Emergency Service Contract if you only work Monday - Friday during the heating season!!

Can anyone recommend a knowledgable, realiable, honest professional that services the Throggs Neck area of the Bronx? Not only do I need to find out what's wrong with this boiler, but I also need someone to balance the system.

I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks for listening.

    Find a Professional, Hannah

It is at once sad and disgusting that your 24 hour service contract has no practical value. That issue aside, there are professionals listed plus others who may not be listed but post here regularly.

Not to volunteer anyone but Al Corelli comes to mind as a steam guy who has done yeoman work in the Bronx. JohnNY at Gateway Plumbing also comes to mind. http://www.GatewayPlumbing.com

I would say a good place to start. This is not to say that others may be as good of course and NYC has a good solid group of steam practitioners. This may be beyond service but worth a call. Good luck.

One more to add to the list of REAL PROS

Matt "Mad Dog" Sweeney, owner of Triple Crown P&H in Floral Park. Matt has designed and installed a brand-new steam system in his own house, so he has an intimate knowledge of steam that not many others do these days.

Any heating company worthy of the name would handle a no-heat call like yours immediately. Don't waste your time and money on anything less.

    Yes

Definitely Mad Dog... I did not know how far Floral Park is to the Bronx but if Matt were willing to come out I would grab the offer. All good choices!

Thanks for your responses. This is how I made out.

I contacted Mike Sweeney but the contractor finally arrived
before Mike called. Thank you Mike for calling so promptly.

The problem, so he says was the LWCO. It cut off but the water didn't and flooded the boiler and I also had a leak on the opposite side of the basement which was caused by water entering the pipes instead of steam. He tested the LWCO twice and it worked both times but he suggested that I replace it because they usually should be replaced every 8 years. He also said that he was going to have someone check my chimney tomorrow. Just to be on the safe side.

My gut is that the LWCO did it's job and the vent is probably blocked by junk at the bottom of my chimney that they never vaccumed to begin with.

He didn't put everything back together because he said that someone will come tomorrow and install the new LWCO for $677.00. Isn't that crazy, or is that a fair price?

I'm just finding that other neighbors of mine dumped this company years ago, now I know why.

well, at least you now Know ...

Why contacting a professional regardless if you understand what they are saying makes all the difference in the world.

at one time when you took your car to the mechanic ...when you got the keys you went out started the car and away you went. in this age, you get the keys and turn the key..and maybe it goes maybe it don't...why ...?...

this has required many people to do their own thing and some are at least able to make the thing Go when they have finished the work. for your own sanity ,you should seriously consider buying some book on steam heat this site happens to have a small unobtrusive book store check it out. there is also a library in case you have any further questions in the future....as a thought.

Matt Sweeny called you right back and has the respect of every heating contractor on this site.

I would call him and have HIM to your work from now on.

You've fooled around with the other guys long enough. Tell them to forget the LWCO and call Matt.

    Scott

If Matt \"Mad Dog\" Sweeney lived near me

he would have the keys to my house. And I do not even have a steam system!

    Good call, Scott.

Hannah, Scott is right. Cut your losses and go with Matt.
