a clean container or 5 gallon bucket with a lid would be a better bet. nowadays you could get a 6 gallon Diesel container...they are yellow...:)

today the fuel oil in a bucket i left out over night was thick like slush...cold weather does not do fuel any favors,so ,...dont leave a container filled outside for emergencies as it may be as much as a problem to get it to flow and burn...

ran out of fuel in the middle of night.

Here's the situation, i ran out of fuel last week and it took 2 days for a fuel delivery due to weather. There are gas stations who sell diesel and kerosene not too far away, could I have just gotten a few gallons in a gas can to hold me in an emergency? Any damage to burner, boiler, or chimney? Would I need to adjust anything, or just hit reset, purge line and it should light up? My family froze and i am thinking of a contingency plan.

    Diesel fuel is

identical to home heating fuel oil, a/k/a #2 oil.

    No problem there.

Kerosene, is an acceptable alternate, a/k/a K-1.

Minimal problems there, i.e., kerosene is a tad "lighter" fuel and would loosen old sludge and gook that may be better off not disturbed. Given your tank is MT, the stiring up point is exacerbated because the fuel you choose will mix only with the junk on the bottom of the tank - NOT be bufferred by a few inches above it.

Gas, as in gasoline? Only if you wish to kill all the occupants of yor house - and the neighbor's on both sides.

If the house is average size, you will burn about 5-gallons a day. More on day one because of the house already being so cool.

Because of the fuel taxes on diesel, it costs about 20% more than normal #2 oil, despite them being identical (other than the dye used so revenuers can be sure of who's using what for what purpose).

  • Hey Ken,,

I heard of a guy who put diesel in his gasoline car once, what a stupid and costly mistake that was! BTW- It was NOT me though!

    If your oil company

If your oil company offers automatic delivery you should sign up for it. You need the oil anyway so if it is a cost issue it shouldn't matter. If they let you run out they should make it right by getting there or bringing it in a can if you are in a tough area. To your question diesel is fine but I would use a virgin can that never had gasoline.

A Fuel Air Explosive is what you will make using gasoline. MUCH more volatile.

As I recall from my training (JP-4 jet fuel for the NH ANG), one cup of gasoline vaporized packs the same punch as 15 sticks of dynamite. A healthy dose of respect is warranted.

    Gasoline?

Thanks for all the advise and I'll store a 5 gal can of diesel, just in case. I had no intention of using gasoline, just explaining I can purchase kero and diesel at a gas station locally.
