old house, old radiators

OK, I'M GONNA MAKE THIS SHORT & SWEET. FIRST, I LIVE IN AN OLD HOUSE (BOUT 100 YRS. OLD-- I THINK). THE CONVERTED GAS FURNACE WE HAVE IS NOT VERY EFFICIENT. HOW DO I ADJUST THE RADIATORS SO THAT WE GET AN EQUAL AMOUNT OF HEAT ON BOTH FLOORS OF OUR HOUSE? ALSO, WHEN I TURN THE HEAT UP AND OPEN THE RADIATOR VALVES, THE RADIATORS MAKE A VERY WEIRD "CLANKING" NOISE. IT STARTS OUT QUIET AND THEN GETS PROGRESSIVELY LOUDER. IT GETS SO LOUD THAT MY FLOOR STARTS TO SHAKE! KINDA SCARY! IT STOPS SHORTLY AFTER I SHUT THE VALVE ON THAT RADIATOR. THE RADIATORS HAVE THE WORDS:" CAMEO WELL-M.-LAIN CO." ON THEM. I HOPE THAT HELPS SOME.:) THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.

MIKE D.

    Scroll up.....

And use the "Find a Pro" function on the top. It's easy.....Plug in your zip code and a radius for seach...and bingo!

Sounds like you're looking for a steam heating guy in your area. Chris

    J.C.A.'s right

Steam is not hard to work on, nor expensive to fix - if, you get the right guy.

Remember however, no valve should be "tempered." Either it's open all the way - or closed tight!

Among other things, the diameter of the orifice on the vent is what impacts the speed (and therefore amount of heat) the rads fill with steam - since the vent just lets out the air.

The boiler must run at under 2 psi: Always! If a vaopr system (of which about 10% are), it must not even run a 1 psi - or it will malfunction big-time.

Find a pro by using that zip code search parameter (top left of this page) and cut to the chase.

Let us know how you make out.
