Enjoyed reading that, couldn't have said it better myself :)
This past week I was called back to a job to check out the "insulator's" work. He wasn't spraying in a full cavity of Urethane foam, he was filling in around 2" celotex he had pieced in :(
Tried to say it was the same. Then tried to say the "reflective coating" would help :) HAHAHAHAHAHA !!!!

Got beat on a bid today by a guy installing a CombiCor and 2 zones for a 2000 SQ. Ft. home. Compared to my mod/con 6 zone masterpeice. Even after explaining the energy savings and developing a relationship.. The price wasn't even all that higher. Can't win em all I guess...0 -
They'll probably call you
to clean up the other guy's mess.0 -
Holy >>>t!
A Combi for 2000 sq ft? That's a pretty substantial load for a glorified water heater. And you weren't that far off on price? Either you were cutting it awfully close profitwise or the other guy is screwing the crap out of the customer for what they are getting.0 -
Just out of curiosity,
what reason(s) did they give you for going with the other guy?

Well the reasons that my price wasn't too far off is that the other guys brother does gypcrete and this was a quicktrack install. He jacked up his price on the quicktrack so that the customer would think that quicktrack is a rip off. I was fair on my price and of course because he was puting in a CombiCor with 2 zones and no outdoor reset his price was lower.
The General Contractor wouldn't let me talk directly to the homeowner about efficiency and outdoor reset. So I did my best to develop a relationship with the GC and sway him. He didn't care.0 -
Against my better judgement
I actually bid a radiant job to a "production home builder" recently. They pawn themselves off as "custom home" builders, but I know better. They just build BIGGER tract houses.
I was asked to give an "apples to apples" bid for a 3500 sqft. home AND include A/C.
My "competitor/equal" bid two zones of radiant and the AHU's had hydro-coils for "when the radiant won't heat the house".
I did the numbers and my design with Wirsbo Joist-Track would have walked away with the heating with a max supply temp of 104 degrees. I zoned the system conservatively.
Sent in my bid with a note that I could not bid to an idiots design. What if I could do the idiot design cheaper than the idiot????
I waited a week and sent a follow up e-mail thanking them for the opportunity to see again why I NEVER APPROACHED THEM for work. Bottom dwellers posing as "High-tech builders" that can only brag about how many caves they build a year. And that is EXACTLY what they build. Caves. 52 comfortable degrees year 'round guaranteed!
Since when does a "builder" give a rats bottom about comfort or annual energy cost in a home they build??? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!
Wanna' have some fun?!?!?! Go ask the best builder you know what ACH means. Go ask them what "wind wash" is. Go ask them, they won't know what you are talking about.
Bottom feeders that strive to perpetuate ignorance and each day when I think my contempt for these idiots can go no deeper, one comes along and proves me wrong.
Not to say that John Q Public is innocent here, they keep lining up for the idiots.
We are completing a house now that has two front doors that cost 5k each. 10k for two doors....HO HAD to have them. Fiber-glass insulation stuffed around the window casings. A million dollar cave. I told the builder that if I get ONE phone call complaining of "we aren't comfy", I am bringing the blower door and I will put the blame EXACTLY where it should be. On the HO! They chose the cave instead of the home.
Sorry for the rant!

Same here
Around my area it the same. It's the homeowner thats I need to close the sale with. 95% of "Custom trak builders" do nt care about the comfort or quality of the system, just if it's lower the the other estimate. Recently i've even walk in and was told they will lay-tubing. They need us just to install a boiler and connect. (no design or heat loss)I end up turning around and walking out. Sad but someone is going to buy these houses for 600-800,000. There should be system installed to match the value.

But Mark
They are really nice doors. Lets face it, it has stayed much brighter in that house. Due to the fact that no air sealing will be done and you can see daylight coming in through all the cracks in the framing. Lets not forget how on the back of the cave the framing ovehangs the foundation about a 1 1/2" so you have this gap down the entire rear foundation. I like to call it engineered air infiltration. You don't want these houses too tight!!!!! The blower door will probably get a "can't reach 50 pascals"!!

You guys are great! I know that you should never involve yourself emotionally in a sale, but how can you do that when you are passionate about your work? Thanks for cheering me up a little!
