BP...
What you said makes sense regarding increased infiltration at colder temps. I'm thinking that we already have it covered because if we didn't, we'd be in serious trouble at design condition.
As for locating the points of infiltration/exfiltration, consider using a blower door test and smoke stick to find and eliminate these points, especialy if they are excessive.
There is a certain threshold at which you expose yourself and other occupants to too tight of a house, but me thinks you'll know when you hit that point.:-)
Thanks for the education. I respect your knowledge from the field.

Brad...
THere are 50 building officials from the Rocky Mountain region who now know what they are looking at and won't be intimdated.
The biggest number of questions pertained to these new mod-con boilers and what they're seeing in the field. By law, the I,O&M manuals MUST be on site at the time of final inspection, and I told them to simply look at the manufacturers simple installation instructions, and if it didn't look right to call the installers on to the carpet.
Great bunch of students.
The highlight of the whole day was when I was walking though the crowd headed for the class, out of the corner of my eye, coming at me in an intercept angle, I see a guy with a mission to stop me. I look up, and it's one of my former students, wearing a building inspectors badge. He grabs my hand and starts shaking it and says "I don't know if you remember me or not (I did), but I took your courses up at Red Rocks College, and I ended up building my own home and designed and installed my own heating system and I just wanted to tell you that it was the best thing I've ever done. Thank you!!"
I told him he was welcome, and asked him if he was paying it forward to which he replied "On a DAILY basis..."
Makes it all worth while :-)
Have a great day!

Thermal Boundary vs. Thermal Mass
So, Real-Time Heat Loss across the Thermal Boundary can be calculated with both the Eatherton and Boilerpro methods, which allows a handy comparison.
Can the Real-Time Heat Storage of the Thermal Mass be estimated by stopping the boiler and recording how long it takes the inside temp to fall by 5, 10, 15, 20 degrees, then graphing the results?? Done on a cold day (and at night to eliminate solar gain), would such data tell anything practical about the structure??
