Quite the presentation!!
Just back from the Viessmann 25th anniversary in N. America celebration in Waterloo, Ont. Viessmann gave a big party for all of their reps, wholesalers and dealers which showed off some new products to be launched by the end of the year. We'll be seeing the Vitodens 100, a scaled down wall-hung boiler that will be priced competitively. No "smart" pump on this one...2 models with inputs of 30-91K or 38-114K. The Vitolaplus 300, oil fired boiler with condesing heat exchanger; The Vitocal 300 2 stage heat pump; Vitosol solar system packages and a new Cascade unit and pre-fab LLH module for staging multiple Vitodens boilers.
The keynote speaker was Dr. David Suzuki, the retired UBC prof who often hosts "The Nature of Things" on PBS. His remarks warned of the looming environmental crisis', false economies, reduced consumerism and other solutions that need to be taken.
An open forum at the end of the show featured Dr. Suzuki, Dr. Martin Viessmann and Harald Prell(N. American director) take questions from the audience. Most of the questions concerned alternate fuel sources and Viessmann's research and market acceptance of more expensive technologies. Dr. Suzuki urged us all to give up our SUV's, end crass consumerism and reduce our "carbon footprint". The sage comments from Drs. Viessmann/Suzuki and Harald were meant to be pondered. Dr. Viessmann is a proponent of high corporate responsibility and ethics. Seems to be rare these days.
I was honored to be there and want to thank Viessmann for their generous hospitality and state of the art presentations. Congratulations on 25 years in N. America!
Viessmann truly sets the benchmark.
Great to see fellow wallies Mike Lampkin, Steve Ebels, Steve Wieland, John Perry, Gary Wallace....

They had one of our jobs up on that showcase wall which was a very pleasant surprise as I had no idea about that.We had sent some picture in recently but I thought it was for something else. It was a long day as I left home at 3:45 A.M. but worth it .
Loved seeing the new product and listening to Dr.Viessmann and DR.Suzuki esp during the Q & A part. Is it just me or does Viessmann always have the best lunches at their events of any manufacturer?
A mighty big public thank you to the folks at RST and Viessmann for thinking to include us in thier day. Here's to 25 more years of sucsess for Viessmann, and all of us . May God allow us to be there for the 50th anniversary.0 -

Doesn't seem to matter what they do.....
Doesn't seem to matter what that company does, they do it the best they know how. It was typical Viessmann all the way, from the product intro's to the "lunch" at noon, "All good" as my boys say.
David Suzuki was thought provoking at the very least, and painted a fairly grim picture of our future unless we humans decide to "go green" in a big way, in a big hurry. I have to say that I agreed with him on nearly everything he said. Even if I didn't, I would hold the man in deep regard simply because I respect the passion which he has for his field of endeavor.
During the open forum session, I was struck by the fact that Dr. Viessmann exhibited that same intensity and passion when he was talking about his company's committment to excellence in design, evironmental matters and efficiency. Both men wound up "talking" with their hands and arms waving and their voices becoming higher pitched as they warmed to the subject at hand. (No pun intended) It was heartening for me to see that Viessmann's committment to environmental concerns runs just as deep as their passion for excellence in their product. The two Dr's. have more in common than one would think, given the diametrically opposed positions that industry and environmental folks ususally hold.
One point that I thought Dr Suzuki could have stressed more is that of first cost being a poor yardstick for "economy". Although he touched on it briefly, I thought he could have made several more points that fit like a glove with Viessmann's business philosophy. I have long felt that the true cost of a product depends not on what you spend in dollars for it, but what the total cost of the product is over its entire life cycle. What is a products cost in terms of actual $$ per year of life, the environmental impact that product creates as it is manufactured, utilized and then disposed of. When measured by the traditional yardstick of first cost, many competing products seem to be less money than Viessmann. When measured using the yardstick of all short and long term costs involved, Viessmann products are one of the least expensive out there if not the least expensive. So many people/consumers/homeowners fail to realize that purchasing decisions they make today, will ultimately have an effect, maybe even a profound effect, on generations yet to come. First cost is not the true cost and we will be in trouble as a nation and world until we get that through our thick heads.
The basic message that Dr Suzuki delivered, (whether he realizes it or not) is that when we fail to include the complete package of costs, incidental and associated, into our purchasing decisions we are assuming a false economy. That economy states that it's only the dollars that matter. This is indeed, a "false economy". As an example, think of coal fired power plants. Many are allowed to produce power utilizing less than state of the art pollution control because the power would become more "expensive" if said controls were mandatory. What, in reality is truly cheaper, an increase of 25% in the cost of electricity or a world that is becoming nearly uninhabitable in many places due to climate change and pollution? Deny it if you want, but there are now, too many arrows pointing in that direction to ignore.
There is simply no valid excuse not to purchase the cleanest, most efficient, longest lasting product available in any category. I'm climbing down off the soapbox and putting it away now.
BTW Paul, that was a VERY distinguished derby you had on there, I don't care what anyone else says! I really enjoyed the lunchtime discussion!0 -
