Does anyone else collect these old stats? I find them fascinating and remind of when things were built to last.

would make these mechanical devices obsolete. Nothing would ever go wrong and thermostats would last forever.

    I donate mine...

to the Dennis Bellante Museum of Hydronic History...

I gave him my Honeywell- Minneapolis wind up chrono therm from 1905 that used to control a coal fired boiler. I wanted to give him the pulleys an dall the other stuff that was a part of it, but he doesn't have enough room...

Cool collection. While on the subject, what do you all do with the mercury bulbs in your old thermostats?

    Did someone mention vintage thermostats......?

Here's a M-H patent 1918 night setback (actually morning comeback) and it's still operating the boiler.Remove the clock, wind it up like an alarm clock, and at the preset time (small dial) a mechanical cam adjusts the temp lever to daytime setpoint.

re: mercury-- Our county has a hazardous chemical collection system in place. I like it because the material is properly disposed of.

Here's a Minneapolis-Honeywell patent 1918 night setback (actually morning comeback) and it's still operating the boiler.Remove the clock, wind it up like an alarm clock, and at the preset time (small dial) a mechanical cam adjusts the temp lever to daytime setpoint. It's way off calibration and the man of the house wants programmable but the BOSS says no way is that being replaced on her wall by an ugly plastic stat. I happily concur. Simple solution: Tekmar remote sensor well hidden in the housing.

As I was extolling the virtues of outdoor reset to the owner he showed me an old, disconnected mercury device on the wall. Circa who knows....early outdoor reset. Gotta love those Dead Men. With a seven year old copper boiler and a mountain of gravity pipes and radiation I think I can set them on a happy road to some serious reduced fuel consumption with some updated controls.

Here's a Minn-Honeywell I looked at today. HO wants setback control. Maybe I should just rebuild this 1918 gem except he'd have to wind it every night. Sort of a 'morning comeback' control. Wind the clock and set a time to bump up temperature. FYI, I'm "keeping" the stat and mounting a remote Tekmar sensor within. They can't bear to part with the vintage look and they won't. The museum will have to wait. This really is some awesome stuff for it's time...and we think we're so smart.

As I was telling him about the benefits of OD reset he showed me this old disconnected reset control. The Dead Men were awesome.

Hey Tom, I can say that looks somewhat familiar. This one may not be exact but it looks very close to being the same. I received it from a fellow technician in NJ.

    Vintage stat

The amazing thing is it's still hooked up and working. They've been playing with it for years and even had the timepiece reworked. You wind it up at night with the morning 'comeback' time on the small dial. The winder key stores in the top.At the preset time a little cam winds around and bumps up the set point. The mercury thermometer is still accurate. I'll keep y'all posted.

    North to Alaska

It awes me to no end knowing one of these stats was shipped almost a century ago and still has a happy home up north. Is it still in use?

    *~/:)

We are dialing in this place as time and scheduling allows...it has an old gravity system it is going to be a bed and breakfast/Museum:) the old boiler all the old rads that IS The only thermostat the old "reset control",the coal feeder ,the expansion tank...stays. we are reusing the rads with new trvs pex runouts, wall and some floor warming (baseloading) with plates (i wanted us to go with individual Oventrop controls for the loops) buh my buddy is into wirsbo flow control manifolds...:) we have an old "Pipe rad"of 1 1/2: with like twenty uies and a 110 feet of pipe or so we will lash up in the museum with 1/2" hepex the power plant is a fancy viessmann oil fired boiler and 300 indirect :)

yup i just got a word in with my buddy at 5 today and maybe we have it going in a week....right now we have some old steam unit heaters lashed up with 1" rehau strung about the three story building while they are remodeling :)

The carpenters been brutal on the job :) getting after the insulators at every turn...noticed a room "well how about spinning in some 1/2" runouts for a buderas panel rad " we look at my idea a while then open the door to the room No insulation ! not in the floor roof or either of the outside walls ..my buddy get P.Oed "They are entrusting the most critical part of the job to the least caring lowest paid guy.." i wont go much further with the conversation.... however i am leary of the new floor build out over the 10 X 12 entrance i had no idea they were adding that room :)))
