Sulphur Odor

If so It could be some H2S gas. hydrogen sulfide gas. And that can be tough on life. Oil well folks have a complete business of safety for that stuff. Oil refineries, burn it off in flares you can see burning all the time. Sulphur is present in coal and when the coal is burned it becomes sulphuric acid, the cause of acid rain. I'd look into where your coal is coming from and ask the folks what the sulphur content is. A good ventillating system around your coal bin and stoker would perhaps suffice but H2S gas IS NOT SOMETHING THAT I'D IGNOR.

    Sulphur Odor From Coal Stoker

From time to time I get a very strong odor of sulpher from my Anthracite Coal Stoker. Since my stoker is centrally located in my basement, I have to implement a 55 gallon drum for my coal supply. I keep this filled to the brim daily, but the odor still exists. Pardon the choice of words, but last summer I replaced the the whole internal mechanical system plus the pipe to the hopper and the worm. I have the blower set on five, on the scale of 1-10. I have been told that the cause of the odor might be wet coal. What do you think about this, or do you think there could be another reason. Thank You.

    P.S. The ODOR IS Horrible.

    hydrogen sulfide

my first entry into this excellent realm called the wall. I just want to concur regarding not only finding out about the sulfur content and ventilating, I would have someone who owns an air monitor that samples H2S if you are inhaling this toxic chemical. It may not get the public notoriety that CO recieves, but as per OSHA CO poses an immediate danger to life and health (IDLH) at 1500 PPM, where H2S poses an IDLH at 500 PPM, and is known to knock out your sense of smell in 2 to 5 minutes, so just because you do not smell it anymore does not mean it still is not present. Be careful, hope to be of help again.
