installed like that i look at the customer and say '' does your boiler water know to make a turn there instead of going straight''!! then i smile..it kills me too..poor installs should fail miserably..it should be a law of nature..but some of these things actually heat the house...which kills me more..

I looked at this today. I have to wonder why the system doesn't heat well and uses a lot of gas!! The water heater is dated 1983, The gas rate on the rating lable is .36-.60 cents a therm, i wish.
Thanks

Not only is the near-boiler piping all wrong
but that rust tells me you may have an acid condensate problem. This is usually the result of poor venting. Check those main vents!
Measure the length and diameter of each steam main and tell us what vent is on it.

Hi Steamhead. The vents are below the mains. The customer does not to spend the money to fix it. I will change the tee and stop the leak. It's a shame. The equalizer line kills me. She is going to wait until it dies, which is sooner than she thinks.
Thanks

As long
as the main vents are on the drips and there's enough "A" dimension to keep water from reaching them, they should work.

The vents are all stained as well. There are two mains with two number 1 Grotons which are shot.
Thanks

How long are the mains
and what pipe size?
Has the system been overpressurized (pressuretrol too high, plugged pigtail, etc)?

Boiler piping
Until you fix the near boiler piping I would not do a thing except make sure the safety and operating controls are working, add a can of surge master and maybe fix the leaks.
If the HO don't want it done right, don't spend much time.
