Flange union gaskets?

Some "Garlok" type gasket material and make one. Wire brush the union clean. If the flange faces are pitted , use a good gasket sealer rated for your application. By all means go to a supply house, not a hardware store, to get the right stuff. Or try here: http://www.statesupply.com/

What to use for flange union gasket?
I'm reconnecting the flange union in a 2.5" steam line in my home. I assume it needs some kind of gasket? Would something in a tube work or does it need an actual gasket? Something that can be found at the hardware store?
Thanks,

If you are connecting a union you do not need a gasket, unless Im misunderstanding your question all you need to do is use two wrenches and tighten firmly.0 -

No, it's a flange union, not a regular union. One with four jackscrews around it's perimeter tighted with nuts.0 -
Use high-temp RTV..
I had the same problem about a year ago. Old union with pitted mating surfaces. Choices were to make a gasket out of bulk gasket material or use RTV. Used Permatex Copper Ultra RTV it's been good ever since. If you don't have Copper Ultra I would expect that Permatex Red would work as I have see it stand up to exhaust (1200+ deg) in exhaust headers without a problem.0 -
flanged unions
yes. you need the gasket. as far as getting the right gasket, from a hardware store? i dought it. plumbing supply houses, usually only sell the full flanged union! you could try making one, using the tube stuff, or making one with the gasket material. just make sure it can withstand the heat.0 -

Gasket
This is not a job for sealants hand-applied except in case of emergency. I would use a Spiral-Wound Grafoil gaskets (they come in kits shrink wrapped on a card with bolts, washers and nuts right there) rated for steam. Not red rubber which can be damaged by oil, but a spiral metal graphite impregnated material. These are not costly and are suitable for higher pressures.

Or a local pipefitters supply house.0 -
