    Black Sabbath

I went to Ozzfest on Tuesday (which I'm still recovering from!) and saw Sabbath with all four original members. An awesome show! Ozzy had the gleam in his eyes and Tony can still play guitar with the best of them. Sabbath was my first exposure to metal when "Paranoid" was released so many moons ago and I got goose bumps when they played "Electric Funeral"! If you get a chance, go see the show.

    .

I went to the big reunion concert a couple years ago. Had a great time.

If I remember right, I got those tickets for free. Won them from the radio station.

Saw them at Ozzfest 97. Excellent show. It's funny how Ozzy's a bumbling idiot on television, but he seems to come together on stage. Bill Ward was not there, unfortunately.

    You ol' metal head you.

I remember getting Paranoid for Christmas. I also remember my father shaking his head when I put it on the turntable ( you younger kids don't know what that is ).

Being a true Rock and Roller, I don't know who the other "best" that Tony can play with. I heard Ironman on the radio the other day and it was .... uh .... . Lets just say I would'nt put him in the top ten rock guitarist.

I agree with you when we are talking about the early years of Black Sabbath, but Tony Iomi got MUCH better later on.

He released some solo stuff in the mid 80's and he smoked! Not many actually improve but he did.

The last time I saw Ozzy was when he was still with Black Sabbath, just before he left. "Black and Blue" tour, Black Sabbath and Blue Oyster Cult.

Maybe I need to listen to some Deep Purple now??

    ahhh Richie Blackmore ..

Your probable right Mark, I hav'nt heard Tony in a while. I would like to hear Steve Hackett play.

By the way did you catch Pink Flyod at the Live 8 concerts !!!!! David Gilmore is one of my top five. The whole band was smokin.

The old days of Sabath still brings back the smell of burnt rope :)

I'm sorry .... what were we talking about ?

    Iron Maiden

Maiden was also on stage just before Sabbath. I was never a big Maiden fan, but they put on a good show. My favorite group, Killswitch Engage, was on the second stage and we were close to the mosh pit (we survived without getting tossed around) for that. Rob Zombie was also great. Did some stuff from the White Zombies era. The main stage line up was, In Flames, Black Label Society, Shadows Fall (also great), Mudvayne (they sucked), Maiden, then finished with Sabbath.

Age range was from 15 years old to 65 years old. And they say metal is dead. I think not!

    I wouldn't mind...

seeing some "Top 5" lists in each category - of guitar, bass, drummer, (other?) you name it!
    Then, now, up and comers?
Just make sure there's a couple of dead dudes in there, this is serious stuff, you know!!!!

    O.K. I'll bite..

    Rock guitarist in no order..

    - Jimi

    - Stevie Ray

    - Carlos

    - David Gilmore

    - Eric

    Unsung Heros ...

    Frank Zappa

    Jeff Beck

    Martin Barre

    Steve Howe

That should stir some things up. Remember we're talking Rock here. No fair talking about John McLaughlin, Larry Coryell or Al Dimeola.

    My favorite Ozzy tune

is "Mama I'm Coming Home". Why? Because it's very different from what he usually does, and he did it so well. IIRC, in the video he didn't even wear his usual makeup.

I think in that song, he was singing as John Michael Osborne (to his wife Sharon) rather than "Ozzy". But that warped baritone voice still came thru, letting us know it could only be him.

I've never been much of a metal fan (SPRINGSTEEN RULES!), but I like to hear someone very talented like Ozzy (or Metallica on that black album as another example) explore different areas of their musicianship and songwriting.

    That was too easy...

for Scott. Isn't Stevie Ray Vaughn Jimi's reincarnate, though - that just counts as one! I kinda liked another guy named Jimmy that played the guitar "right side" up!!

    Bass players:

    John Entwistle (The Who)

    Chris Squire (Yes)

    Jack Bruce (Cream)

Jack Casady (Hot Tuna, Jefferson Airplane)

    John Paul Jones (Led Zep)

Also: Chili Peppers dude? - I can't stand new music, but it's hard to ignore someone who plucks it like that.

    Thanks for humouring me....

    Too many to name.........

Obviously there are some of the great known guys like Hendrix, Jimmy Page and Eddie Van Halen ( who haven't had a good album since 1984). And what about "Dimebag"? He is as dead as you can get, but he'll always be one of the best. I don't know if Joe Satriani is considered rock, but he sure can play. Less known guys like "The Red Chord's" Mike McKenzie and Killswitch Engage's Joel Stroetzel who both hail from Massachusetts ( What is it about Mass and metal?) are also outstanding. The list can go on and on.

    That would be

The Flea ... definatly a talented player.

I agree with your Bass list, I was just never a big Zepplin Fan.

My favorite trvia question : Name the three guitarist for the Yardbirds ?
Now theres a band who must be kicking themselves for letting thier guitarist go :)

    Those singers...

just get in the way - but how about:

Steve Winwood - male (and plays every instrument on earth)

Grace Slick - female (very much so, back in the day)

Boy George - freak (sorry, gotta cover all the genders)

    Lets see....

Favorite rock vocalist...Roger Daltry. One of the oldies who can still belt out a tune as well now, as then.

Bass player, rock....no doubt, John Entwistle. Watch "The Kids Are Alright" and see how a trio pulls off a great song.
Bass player rock/fusion/jazz...Anthony Jackson. He's played with everyone!
Best rock drummer...Steve Gadd. Listen to some old Steely Dan and try to keep up with that!, A close second....sloppy as he was, always played it right, Keith Moon or ANYONE who ever got the chance to play with Frank Zappa.(all good!)3rd, Neil Pert

Jazz/fusion drummers: a tossup...Alphonse Mouson, Lenny White or Narada Michael Walden.

Rock Guitarist: I'm kind of likeing HB's pick of Joe Satriani. He was about 2 hours ahead of his #1 student....Stevie Vai. I won't discount Yingwe Malmstein either!

Jazz/fusion Guitars: all time favorite Al Dimeola but can't get enough of Larry Corryell, Jeff Beck, George Benson, Paco Delucia and Rory Gallagher.Classical...Andre Segovia, DEEP STUFF!

Different strokes for different folks eh? Chris

    Van Halen

Saw them last year. Edward had better clean up his act. We were disappointed. 30 min solo that was on the caliber of a 5 year old and his new eukelele. The bright spot was Sammy. Just say no to drugs.

Godsmack is great live. (another MA band) Saw them with Metallica last year in St Paul. Both bands were excellent. Nothing like "Seek & Destroy" live. It was worth the 32 hour round trip drive. Getting there and back's half the fun.

    I can't believe

Mark Knoppfler wasn't in the line-up. (Listen to "Sultans of Swing") "Brothers-in-Arms" is awsome.

DIRE STRAITS, in case y'all don't know, are from my home town of Newcastle-on-Tyne. Also home of the ANIMALS (whom my Dad played drums with, briefly at the "Walker Working Men's Club" (remember "I'm gonna send you back to Walker, that's where you belong")& "We gotta get outta this place".

And not to forget Brian Ferry (Pygamarama), also from Newcastle.

    Black Sabbath.

I saw them at the Capital Theater in Passaic NJ, right near the banks of the Mighty Passaic River. The exact year escapes me (I wonder why?) but I know it was early to mid seventies. Funny, just last year I spotted an ol box in the basement with alot of old concert tickets in it as well as the ol black light. Oh where Oh where have the years (and brain cells) gone.
