Buzzed by Warthogs today

See the attached.

I took them last week at EAA in Oshkosh.

BTW, the lead P38 in the formation is Glacier Girl.

Recognize the plane(s) in the first photo. After this show they are flying it directly to Washington to be put into the Smithsonian.

Regards,

Ed

while installing a slab radiant job

a pair of A10's buzzed directly over our jobsite! The last of 5 runs was at treetop level!

Did I say, or do, something wrong :)

I'll try to get some pics if they fly by tomorrow. By the time you hear and see them they have already gone overhead. Must be training for ???

Or maybe the 96° heat had me hallucinating, again :)

was timon with him? (Lion King)

We had A-10's in Germany when I was stationed there. I feel much safer with our pilots in the air.

    The greatest

tank killer the world has ever known, FACT!

A very common sight over Western MA, (Barnes AP) and Hartford (Bradley).

Call them Thunderbolts, call them Warthogs, call them A-10's and call them when you want a tank dead, DED, dead!

'Seek, find, destroy', the original TD's of WWII, dad was one of them!

Wow, your own private air show

The airplanes were equipped with heat seeking missiles, they were zooming in on your radiant slab, as we all know how radiant heat gives off lots of nice heat.

If they come back tomorrow, duck!

The air force tried to kill production twice

Not fancy enough for them. Just one of the best single mission airplanes ever designed. The flight crews are just as focused as the plane. Would hate to be on the ground with one of those gunning for me.

    The sound of freedom

    Hot Rod,

We saw some of them at a firing range a couple of years ago when we were installing the air conditioning on the tower at a firing range. Those guys were incredible. I don't know how many shots they can fire in a minute, but they would fire short bursts that were unbelievable.

Those planes and other fighters have a wonderful sound---the sound of freedom!

    Fantastic link, FD.

Great link FD. Definitely a keeper.

Can you imagine trying to avoid 1 & 3/16" shells coming at you @ 65 times per sec'? Just put your sheet-covered noggin (raghead) between your shaking knees, and kiss it goodbye.

    Very, very steamy in Swampland.

Buzzed too, in a blimp of a second

OK, this is not as cool as an A-10, but who's going to argue in this heat?

There was a blimp meet here in the summer of 2003. The Goodyear blimps were here too; those have much more power. I was able to get a snapshot out of this blimp as it floated around our shop, just loitering.

    Happy bird watching.

    I love those planes

The local air guard had them before the current F16s. I think the A10 killed at least half of all the armor we got in Iraq 1. As an old infantryman I think they are the best air backup the ground guy has, downed pilots like them too.

    Enh, once a zoomie,

    always a zoomie, FACT!

    Aim high, fly higher, USAF!

BTW, saw this puppy open up a few times in night raids over SEA, AWESOME! Although I fully respect the A-10, this is THE machine!

    I was buzzed

by warthogs once while ice climbing in the white mountains.
the guide had just finished telling us this hair raising
tale about an avalance on the climb we were on. I honestly thought I was a goner, I heard the sound long before I saw the A10 I figured this had to be what an avalance sounded like. these guys exploded over the back side of the mountain and cut a turn. i could count the rivets on the jet and see right into the cockpit...wow thanks for reminding me

    A friend of mine

E-mailed me a video complete with sound showing one of these airborne arsenals mowing down some terrorists in the act of planting a roadside bomb at night. It is absolutely staggering to realize that they drilled these guys and their trucks from a distance of over 2 miles. They never knew what hit them and I hope with everything I have that I'm never on the receiving end of one of those bad boys. There is no chance for survival unless you can get 20'under the ground before they hit you.

    A-10

    Hot Rod,

I built those planes in the early eightys. Worked for Fairchild Republic on Long Island. Simply the best ground troop support plane ever built. It flies low and slow, is very maneverable and easy to maintain. The pilots love to fly it. The amount of fire power it carries is amazing. It is built around a gattling gun that eats armor for lunch. I would bet that the A-10 saved more lives in the mid east than any other piece of equipment. I am proud to be a part of it.

AKA, Gary from Granville PS I will post some pics if I can find them.

    Me and my D-8 dozer

were buzzed almost every night on our gold mine up here in Alaska. I was the night operator. My job was to push up enough paydirt at night to keep the sluice box loader in material for the next night. We were about 110 miles north of Fairbanks. Right in the flight path of the A-10's coming back from the Yukon Flats training area. I remember the first night I was out there pushing dirt around like no tomorrow. No one else out there except me. All the other crew members were a mile back at camp snoozing away. I get this eerie feeling and look up the valley and literally 60 feet off the deck were two A-10's haulin you know what right down our valley. I'm sure I was in their cross hairs. A D-8 Cat probably looks alot like an Iraqi tank to the pilots. I just hoped they weren't getting any flash-backs! They screamed by and I just thought about what it would be like to have a couple of them on you for real. NOt a pretty picture. Depleted uranium shells eats hardened steel for breakfast. After they found me, I could usually expect two to three "fly-overs" a week. If I could see them soon enough coming, I would jump out of the cab and salute them from the tracks. Pretty awesome machines.
    Regards,
    Rocky

They stopped in Dayton on the way

The SpaceShipOne made a stop in Dayton for refuel and for historical purposes. This was on the route from Oshkosh to Dulles.

Mike Melvill, the first to pilot it, gave a most fascinating speech, giving lots of brilliant details about how the machine works. He included a video of the actual flight and a recording of the presidential phone call they received after their success.

The sort of thing you want to be a part of. It was about as historic as the one of two public speeches Orville ever held.

He was given a copy of the FAA pilot license no. 1, issued to Orville Wright a long time ago. Wright family members were present.

After the take off at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, the space ship did a low fly over the Wright Brothers Memorial, where I caught this picture. It was preceded by two F18, and a flying replica of the Wright flyer. Then it was followed by two Gulfstream. A whole cortege.

And it will never fly again.

Who knew? the space ship itself is propelled by burning rubber, the sort that makes tires?!? It is a hybrid solid/liquid fuel rocket, the liquid being nitrous oxide.

Sorry, no hydronic rocket... but the Wright mansion is steam heated, though.

    I was permanent TDY

out of Wright-Pat in the 60's and 70's. My car spent more time there than me, I was doing service calls out of a Starlifter (C-141)! We were the model for the Red Horse & Prime Beef units.

Nice town, nice people, only fitting a plane that burns rubber would show up in the tire capitol of the world!

    Pictures from OSH

Ed, thanks for the pictures from OSH. I hope you don't mind if I print off the one of the formation. Didn't have my camera ready when they were making those passes. Where else can you see four great warbirds like that in formation? It made this old wallie feel proud to see the Glacier Girl at Oshkosh. I was chosen to fabricate the wing jigs for the rebuild. Steve Hinton (the pilot) told me last Tuesday that he has seen 450 MPH on the airspeed indicator and that it flies great.

    What's that twin engine bird?

Looks kinda like a B-26 Martin Marauder but I don't remember building a model of one with wingtip fuel tanks.
