    Lightning damage

Got home tonight and the answering machine told me one of my customers had no hot water. The lady of the house greeted me at the door and informed me that the Vitodens was not working and they had not hot water. She also mentioned that the house had been hit by lightning in a storm that blew through here yesterday. Their TV, DVD/VCR, frig, microwave and well were all destroyed and they didn't discover the lack of hot water till they got the pump replaced. I went to the mech room thinking the worst for the circuit board on the Vitodens and discovered an OD code on the diagnostic display. Burner lockout. I reset the burner, which promptly lit and the fault code disappeared. Cycling the boiler off/on several more times resulted in continued normal operation. I take that as a testimony to the design of the Vito.

    Amazing.....

How a 400+ dollar video system protects that 2.00$ fuse or 15.00$ circut breaker isn't it?

It happened to my parents about 8 years ago, and the projection T.V. (42" and at the time worth far more than the posted price) was a prize that my sister won at a superbowl party!

I think I've seen this happen on quite a few units, but with proper protection I usually find a poofed fuse in a multi-switching relay. Just lucky I guess. Chris

    A whole house surge supressor

should be a part of every homes electric system. They protect from anything except a direct hit lightning strike, and serve every electricity consuming appliance in the house. Todays electronic based applainces need this protection. Square D and Cutler-Hammer make them, and there are probably others. They must be installed by a liscensed electrician. Your customer should also ivestigate a lightning protection system, especially if their house is the tallest object around in the midst of fields or on a lake shore.
