    Ha!

Made you look. Here's an old water heater I picked up at a flea market. It's about 24" tall. Has 4 coils inside for water to flow through while a flame of some sort, there's no burner on it, shoots up through the copper coils. There's 3/4 pipe going in the back top and bottom for the water connections. There's a tag on it that say Hercules and a serial number. If any one knows more about it please share any info. My wife says when she saw it she knew I would buy it. Apparently she thinks I'm fairly predictable. She could be right. Our porch dog, Rusty, was facinated. He stared at it all day. :P WW

    Kerosene

It probably had a kerosene burner for the flame. I bet the coil was piped to a tank above and circulation was by thermo-syphon. With a small burner and relatively large water volume connected it would be easy to control the temp by hand.

    Could have been K1

but also could have been gas. Either way it was hooked up to a tank like David says.

The Hercules brand was sold thru Sears, but I don't know who actually made them.

I was thinking it was some sort of heat reclaimer for a flue pipe.

Wayne, take a look at: http://www.waterheaterrescue.com/pages/whh/pages/historypages/ruud-sidearm.html Your unit looks like it might have been made by Ruud for Hercules? This site also has a museum of old water heaters, some real artwork in cast & brass! Have a good one!
