Radiator Vent Broke Off

then run the threads in the rad with a 1/8" pipe-thread tap. Simple!

    Radiator Vent Broke Off

    I have a radiator vent that broke off while trying to remove it. Any tricks or tools that can be used to remove the threded piece stuck in the radiator?

    There used to.....

    Be a "radiator tool" available that had a tap, for the threade in the rads., a dye for the vents and an easy out opposite the dye for just such an occassion.

    I haven't see one in a few years but I'm sure someone still makes them. Chris

    Easy out

    Try an easy out. You can get on at the hardware store but bring along old vent so you get the right size one. EJW

    I can get them out sometimes with an 1/8" easy out. But usually have to dril it.
  • This happened to me a few months ago

    Of course I wasn't prepared with the proper tools . So I sprayed some WD-40 on the threads and lightly tapped a flat head screwdriver into the middle of the hole . I turned the screwdriver ever so slightly and the piece backed right out .

    Beware "easy outs". I have broken the cast iron by torking too hard with one. Best to drill it out and chase the threads with a tap.
