broomell vapor system

This system was designed to have the chimney draft pull the air out of the system. Trouble is, if steam gets into the chimney it will destroy it.

Many times a big vent like the Gorton #2 will work fine on the dry returns of this system. Don't even bother with the Hoffman 4A on a Broomell, that vent is basically a toy unless you're working on a very small one-pipe system. And you say someone used a Hoffman 1A on that system- the 1A adjustable radiator vent? No wonder it won't heat properly.

If the system still doesn't heat properly, you can reestablish the chimney vent. If you do this, put an aquastat on the vent pipe that will stop the burner if steam gets that far.

If you can't find Gorton vents in your area, call Gorton at (908) 276-1323, talk to Linda Mast (president of Gorton) or Ken Kunz and tell them I sent you. They will see that you get what you need.

Just replace that return line and leave the check valve out. That's what I'd do.

    broomell vapor system

Found a charming three story home in the poconos with broomell vapor system, problem being coal fire stove was replaced by an oil burner and receiver is no longer there.Customer complaint unit uses lots of oil and heat is not satisfactory. Reading the lost art of steam heating companion. The air was venting through receiver to chimney.Currently return line has hoffman 1a vent above boiler.
Problem 1. Is this piping correct, if not how can situation be corrected.
Problem 2. Steam header is split into front and rear halves of home, checked return coming into hartford loop
    and piping is 33% blocked.
Presently installing new burnham #SIN7 boiler. Sized radiators and added pickup factor calling for 543 sq ft Installing natural gas because piping is in basement.
Very intersted in doing this install properly first time.
Note: Is there a big difference between hoffman 4a and Gorton #2 vents, if so where can gorton vents be purchased.

    love the broomell

    Hi John,

That's one of my favorite systems. Follow steamhead's advice about venting, mo venting - mo better.

That was a true vapor system and works best at low pressure up to 8 ounces. Have the radiator valves or return fittings been replaced? Either one can cause problems.

Let us know how it works out.

    Best regards, Pat
