    no simple formula

If you're putting in a new radiator, I'm assuming it's hot water. You'll want to figure the heat loss in your room and make sure your radiator is big enough to allow for that heat loss at your desired running temperature. You can get heat loss software by clicking on "Free Heat Loss Calcs" on the left side of your screen. You can also look up the BTU/EDR relationship for your desired running temperature to come up with a radiator size.

This is a job probably best left to a professional. The "Find a Professional" on the left side of your screen works well.

  • If this is for an added room or perhaps previously unheated attic space and you have an existing system with iron radiators, I cannot stress enough the importance of sizing the new radiator(s) to work at the supply temperature already available in the system. Frequently this is significantly lower in ALL conditions than the "standard" of 180 degrees.

Some will attempt to size the new radiator by modern standards without evaluating the current system. When done this way you will NOT be happy with: your comfort; your bills to "fix"; your fuel consumption.
