Ever wonder how some contractors operate

I was called out to fix a leak in a 1" hot water line at a great little Italian resturant about nine in the morning, water was spraying and they needed it fixed before the lunch crowed started to filter in.When we pulled up my budy knew the guys across the street so we took a minute to say hi.They were changing out an old air conditioner condenser which they already had removed, evadently with out reclaiming the freon. My buddy told me that he never bothers to reclaim the freon because he doesn't want to buy a recovery machine, could it be the money?
Anyway we go in and start to fix the leak as I come back out about ten minutes later I notice that they are already sweating the old line sets on the new American Standard condenser, these guys work fast! You can to who needs a filter dryer, nitrogen to test your connections,or a good vacuum pump to get rid of moister? How do I know these guys didn't do any of the above becuase in the time I sweated a one inch coupling they were already done and gone.
Home owners please be awear of these type of installers don't be afraid to ask questions and get a good quality job.
Ijust wanted to post that here becuase I just couldn't beleive it. Maybe becuase I always try to work like I'm working on my house.

    Probably

Charge as much as a legal contracor, too ! Or, maybe $ 50 less :)

Take the money and the rest of the day and go to the bar.

Drop a dime on 'em (er, 50 cents) and take them out of the game.

    Drop the dime

I wouldn't hesitate for a second to do just that..

I baby-sat my buddy's house while his split-system, including lineset, was being replaced by the low bidder.

They were about to cut the tubing, when I asked where their recovery unit was. "We don't have one". Me "why", "they cost too much, and we always do this". Me "can you rent one?" "yeah, I suppose we could but why should we" Well, I said, it'll cost you less than the alternative. "What's the alternative?" Me "a $5,000 fine". They went & got a recovery unit and did it right.

The good news, my buddy's electric bill went down almost 40% the next month.

The bad (good) news, the contractor is not in the A.C. business anymore. He's a landscaper, no freon involved :O)

This is the only planet we'll ever have, folks.

    Brian, the freon cop.
