Indirect HW versus direct gas HW heater

Since you have gas, did you consider possibly a wall hung gas heater? Only burn fuel when you consume hot water. Much higher efficiency than your oil steam boiler. Depending on make and manufacturer of the unit, you should be able to get 4-7 gpm with little difficulty.

Potential issue for venting. Typically use stainless steel and venting can not be combined with any other appliance.

Good luck

Indirect HW versus direct gas HW heater

I have a 40 gallon gas hot water heater. My home is heated with steam via WM SGO-4 fired with 1GPM with building heat loss of 76,000 BTU.

Does it make sense to heat my hot water with an indirect and this boiler? In the summer, I'll be heating a lot of boiler water to heat the domestic HW. I'm assuming that this will offset the benefits gained in the winter. I know it would be different with a condensing boiler.

Can anyone give me some guidance on this?

    For me..

who also is a homeowner with a steam boiler, the concern expressed to me by my professional was that the circulating boiler water could have a lot of sediment etc. in it and it might not be good for the circulator and/or other parts that are involved in this arrangement.

The other thing which overrode all of that was that I was planning on moving within two years of installing and it wouldn't have paid for itself. Short-sited perhaps, but there you go.
