Larry obviously appreciates this genre' of laugh medicine so I thought I'd throw in a few lines about living in Michigan. The scary part is that most of these are true.

You know you're a true MICHIGANDER when . . .

1. "Vacation" means going up north on I-75.

2. You measure distance in hours.

3. You know several people who have hit a deer more than once and a few who have hit multiple deer simultaneously.

4. You often switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day.

5. You can drive 65 mph through 2 feet of snow during a raging blizzard, without flinching.

6. You see people wearing camouflage at social events (including weddings).

7. You install security lights on your house and garage and leave both unlocked.

8. You carry jumper cables in your car and your wife knows how to use them.

9. You design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit.

10. Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow.

11. You know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter and road construction.

12. You can identify a southern or eastern accent.

13. Your idea of creative landscaping is a statue of a deer next to your blue spruce.

14. You were unaware that there is a legal drinking age.

15. Down South to you means Ohio.

16. A brat is something you eat.

17. Your neighbor throws a party to celebrate his new pole barn.

18. You go out to fish fry every Friday.

19. Your 4th of July picnic was moved indoors due to frost.

20. You have more miles on your snowmobile than your car.

21. You find 0 degrees "a little chilly."

22. You drink pop and bake with soda.

23. Your doctor tells you to drink Vernors and you know it's not medicine.

24. You can actually drink Vernors without coughing.

25. You know what a Yooper is.

26. You think owning a Honda is Un-American.

27. You know that UP is a place, not a direction.

28. You know it's possible to live in a thumb.

29. You understand that when visiting Detroit, the best thing to wear is a Kevlar vest.

30. You actually understand these jokes, and you forward them to all your Michigan friends.

BTW, when I hit "post a new thread" Brad White's name came up along with his e-mail address.

    I just need a break

I have been following the global warming thread and now I need a break. A friend sent this to me and I forward it to all here for what ever it may be worth:

    The 10 Commandments
    Minnesota Style....

    I. Der's only one God, ya know.

II. Don't make dat fish on yur mantle an idol.

    III. Cussing ain't Minnesota nice.

IV. Go to church even when yur up nort.

    V. Honor yur folks.

VI. Don't kill. Catch and release.

VII. Der's only one Lena for every Ole. No cheatin'.

VIII. If it ain't yur lutefisk, don't take it.

IX. Don't be braggin' bout how much snow ya shoveled.

    X. Keep yur mind off your neighbor's hotdish.

OK so you might need to be from Minnesota to appreciate this but for me this is at least as entertaining as the second half of the GW thread.

Thanks Dan for having so much patience and obviously a great sense of humor.

    minnesota nice

    Hi, Jimmy from Minne here...

I guess Garrison Keillor is our Newhart ("and dis is my other brother Ole..."),
and the Movie "Fargo" did for us what "Deliverance" did for the south. It's our burden to carry, I guess. Lena likes butter better than Ole...

    But I digress.

I also really liked the first half of the "Al Gore the hippocrite/global warming"
thread, but I definitely think it's time to bury that one.

I really wanted to get a "non-CO2" discussion going in that thread to debate the climate effects of particulates and sulfate aerosols. Maybe next time.

It was fun while it lasted!

    WHUT?!?!??!

Quote, ".......the Movie "Fargo" did for us what "Deliverance" did for the south."

Well I seen Fargo a bunch of times and I do not recall ANY scene that required making pig noises.

Are you sure you're from Minnesota?

Is the ice gettin' to ya'?

    Lutefisk?

As a half-Swede, I can tell you that the national delicacy is inedible. I could not even feed it to 'Mr. Nilson', my grandmother's pig. He would not touch the stuff.

Something about perfectly good fish soaked in lye until gelatinous. If not your lutefisk or even your own, it is best left alone.

    That would have been great

There are a lot of other things that could at least be having an affect.

But, truth be told... I'm not sure how much time I will have to continue the discussion with an outage starting in 2 weeks and some possible minor health issues that may need attending now.

Perhaps something to discuss another time.

    Have a peacefull week.

Went up there for new year eve for first time... ( thanks god for global warming, less snow on one mile long driveway to cabin, my truck barely made it thru 17 plus inches of snow than the 38" for aveage snoefall) no electric, water, automatic heat... Have outhouse with heated seat... too spoiled on that part...

    40 below where you are

But if it got that cold here, I'd be severely bummed out. Up in International Falls, they are having difficulties keeping the Official Designation of "The Ice Box of America". Must be Glo... oops I almost said it!!! We're not going there right now. We actually had a pretty mild winter and I'm still looking forward to spring. Actually, looking forward to making my gas meter go slower with a new Knight install.

    My Minnesota days.....

    Larry,

I was born in Minnesota!! Born in St Paul. Grew up in Roseville. I loved it.

My mother used to dress me up in long winter underwear and a snow suite from head to toe. It would be something like -10 outside. She would throw me out the door in the morning and I would stroll in just before super time. No one told me that -10 was cold. I guess I was never smart enough to realize that. It was fun!! We would wake up to a foot of fresh new snow and still go to school. You never saw a blade of grass from nov to April.

    Lutfisk

They serve it at the Norsk Høstfest. My aunt Sylvia used to make it when I was a kid. Terrible stuff, and any Norwegian I have ever talked to agrees completely. Only the poorest Scandinavians would eat Lutfisk. Of course, the wealthy Scandinavians had less incentive to come to America.

Wonder if it is that URL thing again Steve?

Did you send me something with a URL in it? That is what happened before. It is odd in that I have otherwise been away for a few days.

Great List by the way. I was in MI once (St. Clair Shores which may not count) some years ago. And I know what a Yooper is.

Native Detroiter here. #29 is a stretch. Wasn't the name of your town, Falmouth, created from a newspaper typo? I believe the original name was Foulmouth.

    Take that Yooper wannabee!

Had a friend from Michigan when I was in the Air Force...

If you are showing what part of the state you are from, do you guys still hold up your left hand and point to the spot?

    I'll admit that

The better half and I walked from Ford field to our hotel after a Lions game last November and we weren't mugged.....so, OK, I'll give you 29. :)

Local history has it that the name of our fair "city" was originally Pinhook, derived from the 180* bend that the river made in town. In the 1870-1890 era, I think it earned the name you mentioned, "Foulmouth", from all the loggers who were bent on coming into town for a good time on the weekend. There were at point 5 hotels, 7 churches and 2 bars along with the ones in the hotels and the town was the county seat. In an election during the 1890's, legend has it that the folks from Lake City came to town and got all the loggers drunk and told them to vote for Lake City as the new county seat. The measure passed so it must have worked.
It's believed that some of the Dutch immigrants that populated this area departed from the port of Falmouth England and named their new home after that town. Don't know if that's true or not but it makes a little sense.

Yes, it's true, we do in fact hold up out hand and point to our palm to show where we live. That would be the right hand becasue the thumb is on the wrong side if you look at your left.

    Freezing rain right now

Ugly day period! 30* and going up though so it will probably just turn to rain. Not much for snow left, maybe 3" of crusty granule type stuff in the yard. Most of the farm fields are bare except for the fence rows.

    Lake Orion

It used to be a sleepy town where my cousins had a "cottage" on the lake. Now it is busting at the seams (located about ten minutes north of "The Palace of Auburn Hills" where the Pistons play). That little cottage has now been replaced by one of several closely bunched million dollar lakefront "estates." I liked the good 'ol days better.

"4. You often switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day. "

We do that now, this time of year!

High 40's this morning, probably low 80's this afternoon. The air seems yellow with all the pollen, so people don't want to open their windows. Yuck!

ON EDIT: They finally said our pollen count on the radio: 2597ppm.

Those Google ads crack me up

But they should tell you something about the state of affairs in Michigan. I have no idea if the same ones will pop up again but the four I saw were these, in order of appearance.

Ad #1: Allied Van Lines ad for moving out of the state

Ad #2: an ad from a lodge on Lake Superior

    Ad #3:

Ad #4: A website to help you find and track sex predators in Michigan
