WORST BOILER TO SERVICE. TRY READING THE TEMP GAUGE & SETTING AQUASTAT THAT SOME GENIUS IN ENGINEERING DESIGNED IN BACK RIGHT REAR. IF YOU LIVE ON STATEN ISLAND,DON'T THINK YOU CAN GET PARTS FOR 3-4 DAYS

Gas Boilers to stay away from
Hi,
I'm in the market for a new boiler and one contractor recommended a SlantFin. Question: are there boilers that I should not buy because they are more trouble than they are worth?
Thanks,
Kevin0 -
gas or oil steam or h.w.?0 -
Munchkin?
No personal experience, but have heard many, many complaints about the munchkin. Bad burner fan that repeatedly leaves people without heat. You get what you pay for, and I believe this is the cheapest of the Modulating condensing boilers.0 -
Ah yes...
"No personal experience... Bad burner fan that repeatedly leaves people without heat."
Repeatedly sounds pretty certain when you use it like that. The potential for leaving people without heat must be the top concern confronting any contractor.
Are you so sure that you are willing to hurt people's livelihoods stating opinions as facts? Mind you, if most are actually failing, then shouldn't HTP be saying what happened and why it won't happen again?0 -
There have been
some Wall threads about these fans. Here's one I could find quickly:

Slant/Fin is fine
if installed properly. And that company has an awesome tech support department.

I`ve never had a prob with S/F
I find them very service friendly and helpful for tech support, perhaps you just installed it in the wrong direction?

The Worst Boiler out there
is the one installed by a contractor who dosn't follow directions from the manufacuter. The contractor who dosn't size the boiler by using a heat loss calculation. The contractor who can't give you any reference's in your area. The boiler that is installed by an installer who say's he dosn;t have the time to go to training classes and feels that his employees ( if he has any ) don't need to be payed to much since they are lucky to have a job at all. The boiler installed by the guy with the lowest possible price that seems so low it can't be true.
THATS the worst boiler out there !

slant fin
I have the Slant Fin VSPH installed in a closet. The person that installed my boiler put in a temp/pressure gauge in the manifold so it would be easy to see. No big deal at all.
I am very happy with the boiler, and the guys at the tech support at Slant Fin are the best.0 -
Would you please
turn off your CAPS key when you post? Thank you.Retired and loving it.0 -
Amen
Scott. Said without YELLING, also.

Ding-Ding-Ding-Ding
Give that man a cigar!
Scott hit it right on the head. Properly applied and installed, there is no boiler to stay away from.

the worst boiler
The worst boiler I've worked on are the Bryant... Perhaps they changed the design by now, thanks god... The burners were almost impossible to reinstall after cleaning or replacing the thermocouple... They were the gas company "special" as they were doing their own way oversized bolier installations.0 -
how about a...
Glowcore....I have only heard of one person who was happy w/ one. kpc

Yes Jack and Jeff....
He speaks the truth ! (I'll even vouch for the training part!)
One of my mentors taught a class at the Ma. PHCC trade show last weekend...and one of the TRUTHS he spoke of will remain with me forever. Anything that you don't ASK or READ and LEARN about...is a piece of poop. (My word not his .
I couldn't agree more. TRAINING is the key. If you're running into problem units and didn't install them...Find out who SELLS them, and ASK! Ask for some training from the maker, ask if they have a contact number for the rep. or the manufacturer. Ask if they have training sessions through the distributor or if they have classes anywhwere that you can get to..ASK.
Misunderstood doesn't necessarily mean a piece of poop. Lack of basic knowledge and ignorance, on top of a closed mindset however...IS.
All CAPS are mine. No computer malfunction...even though it just might be a piece of....... Chris0 -
Sorry!
No intention on hurting anybody in the business! I was just stating what I have heard here before, and also several times at HVAC-Talk. In my opinion, I would rather either pay more for a "better" mod-con, or pay more for fuel in a CI boiler. I'm sure the Munchkin has it's place, as all other equipment does. On the air side look how well Janitrol sells No offense intended.0
