Radiant Floor (Insulation)?

Be careful with that R-value claim.

It can be, in an ideal world, decent. with an airspace. if it's kept clean.

Joists are not the cleanest places I'm aware of though, so relying on reflectivity to replace real R-value is always a mistake in my book. real R value doesn't care about dust and dirt.

I have recently installed a staple-up radiant floor system in a new home. TJI Floorjoist system employed. I have normally used friction fit fiberglass insulation in conventional floorjoist systems.
The friction fit is too narrow for TJI system. Kraftfaced fiberglass is not allowed by local codes, now what?? Help!!

    Well

If you included insulation in your scope of work, you have only one option as far as I can see.... Rigid foam.

FWIW, DO NOT include the insulation in future bids. My proposals read, "Insulation by others".

Cost of business doesn't change whether I am installing a Vitodens or tacking up insulation. I hate insulation, so I leave it to the guys that do it for a living. They gotta' eat too, and I would be some mad if I found that the insulator was offering radiant systems!

    You should be able

to find insulation cut for TJI. I see it all the time, unless you have odd center spacing?

I have also seen fiberglas batts held in TJIs with those wire deals.

I hope you aren't shopping for foil faced that some manufactures spec for certain staple up. getting real hard to find foil backed fiberglass. Possibly non exisint for TJI widths.

    Why not...

    just install this:
    www.microfoil.com
This is R14.4 and is 16" wide. It should fit the TGI's but I have not tried it on them yet.

    insulation

you should have the builder put the insulation in first of all but now that you are commited you should use foil faced insulation with the foil against the tubing. that will get you the best upward heat transfer

just more of my thoughts but...

Why would you pass on to the builder an important step that you can control and profit from? Especially with todays nice foam products that does not require the safety gear and itching of the past.

  • foil is completely unnecessary. not a problem to use it, but don't make your job harder looking for it in particular. it's not worth it.
