Main water shut off leaking by

I'm looking for some input for a device used to temporarily stop the leak by water from a bad main shutoff to place a new valve and sweat it in. I've seen them but cannot find them in the catalogs. Thanks.

Freeze it.
There are several tools that will freeze the pipe to permit changing of the valve. The problem is that they are expensive. I've heard that in some areas the water company maintains this main valve. You should check with them. Even if its not their problem, there may be a "corporation cock" as we call them in NYC in the street that could turn the water off.
Or they could recommend someone to do the work.
