Thank YOU, Boiler Guy. I'd been wondering whether a drop header would be appropriate for our commercial retrofit project. Your post tells me well it just might at that! Something else to think about and work into the proposal...

Ball valves on drop header steam.
Why do you install ball valves on a steam header?

We all need to settle in to our own little ways of doing things
Every man does the same task a little differently. The ultimate responsibility for the job lies with the installer for he will be the one that will get the phone calls if there are problems. It is also not always practical to repipe the whole boiler room just so the boiler is piped EXACTLY the way the schematic shows. As long as something is not dangerous or grossly inefficient, I think it is up to the installer to interpolate the guidelines and do what works best for that individual job. Mad Dog

What makes
malleable fittings a bad choice , Roger ?0 -
James
I think if you got the room to work in , by all means follow the piping practice that will work the best . The main thing we are challeged with is piping the mains tight to the boiler because it seems like every homeowner wants as much space for storage or living and we get the minimum amount of room to work in . After a while it just becomes 2nd nature to keep it all high and tight and not follow recommended clearances to the letter . But .... if you do a few tricks like upsizing the header and dropping the equalizer full sized , the system works real well .0 -
Cast versus malleable fittings
I think that it is code here in MA to use cast as they can be easily broken by a hammer if necessary to change on a system. I might be wrong, but that was what I was taught and after trying to remove a couple of frozen malleable fittings on steam, I tend to aggree.

Order of assembly?
Hey MD- novice piping question here- in what order did you put this together? Are those unions strong enough to handle the torque needed on the larger pipes or did you assemble the header first, then attach at the unions?
thanks,

Will the reduction elbow at the end of the header pool water? I thought it should be full size and reduce after the elbow. What say ye?0 -
good question
That is a good question...

What type of insulation/coating did you use? It looks as though the insulation was applied wet.
Thanks,
