The OD of 2 1/2" black pipe is 2.875" and is a commonly used size.

How likely is it that my mains are 2 1/2 " versus 2"? I am having second thoughts about ordering tees for my main vents since I can't tell for sure. The OD of the female elbow measures (which I can't remove to see) something like 3.6 inches and they have a "G" on almost all the pipes in my system. One pipe steam here.0 -
Because of the rarity of 2 1/2" pipe fittings I would guess they are 2".0 -
I love this thing

Dan, you have to measure
the outside diameter of the pipe, not the fitting.
If the pipes are covered with old insulation, don't disturb it. Instead, measure the outside diameter of the insulation and subtract 2 inches. Most of this old insulation had walls that were 1 inch thick.

Jim,
I just got the package today. How can I thank you enough . . . .God Bless you0 -
Gotta get one of those!0 -
It's new fiberglass insulation and it's diameter is 14 1/4 "0 -
You actually measured the circumference
but it should be 2-inch pipe.

They used to come in two sizes
They were inexpensive tools...the small one was like a dollar..the larger one cost some slightly heavier dubloons *~/:) When i saw them in Dans Store..:) i have really considered getting another new version...when you are getting into plumbing, it is a dynamite tool..you will be certain of pipe sizing once you dial one in...takes the guessing game right out of the deal:) Honestly sometimes i can look right at a piece of 1 1/4 and labour over if its one inch one day or 1 1/2 the next. )
*~/8) its these 500 $ glasses they dont see too good:)0 -
Daniel...
I hope they will work for you!
Enjoy,
